    1956 Differential Stamp Codes

I have not received my JM yet and I was wondering if someone could tell me what the different codes are for the rear end for a 56 . My car was a early one with the 265 with dual Quads as the base engine, wondering what might have been the common rear end ratio that would have been in that car and what the code would be? Ser # is 1282 with a build date of May 3rd, 56. Thanks in advance.

      Re: 1956 Differential Stamp Codes

      Sheldon,

If your VIN is 1282, then it's the 282 car built. In 1956 VIN's start at 1001. In 1957 VIN numbering changed to start 100001.

So, if you're using the Birthday Book as your reference, your 1956 car # 282 would've been built approximately Feb 28, 1956.

And if your 1956 car # is 282 - welcome to the world of 1st design 1956 Corvette engines.

You beat me too it. My old 56 was a early car also with all the goodies & auto. I heard that most all early 56's were loaded & autos. Is that the case?

My car #282 has power hardtop, radio, heater, courtesy lights, windshield washers, hardtop, I believe it had the three speed. The correct pedals are in it and the washer pump is in the location for a standard tranny. All the clutch linkage looks original. The diff does have the code for an automatic but it has been changed or removed from the car. This car has been in a shed for over 40 years but is missing original motor. Color is cascade green with beige intior and coves, soft top appears to be white, not much left off it after all these years.
