Which evaporator and AC heater core to buy?

I just checked the price for the evaporator and the AC heather core at some online Corvette C2 shops

Just for those 2 parts there was a difference of $126 which is quite a lot. Especially on the evaporator which is close to $300 at one shop but close to $200 at the cheapest shop
I find it not likely that the evaporators can be made at the same manufacturer?

It makes me wonder if the parts is not quality parts at the place where the parts was so much cheaper?

Can any tell me the name for somebody that manufactures quality heather cores and evaporators?

I know very little about these parts except that the GM parts were discontinued from SERVICE a lot of years ago. However, I would be surprised if there's more than one manufacturing source for the AC heater core. I'm surprised that any manufacturer makes the evaporator.

      Claus,

The evaporator for my '67 came from LIC, it has an "Old Air Products" sticker on it. If you go to the Old Air Products website and type "10-6146" in the search box, it will take you to their 1963-1965 evaporator page with a good sized photo. Do you already have a new Condenser?

I suspect all of the Corvette parts vendors carry the same Old Air Products evaporators. Paragon has a 10% discount for NCRS members, and some of the other vendors have discounts and/or free shipping that kick in at different price points, which you would probably meet or exceed if purchasing evaporator + heater core + condenser & associated small parts.

Re: Which evaporator and AC heather core to buy?

I phoned the one that have the evaporator 100 dollars cheaper than the others and asked if he could tell me who had made it?
i answered that he did not know and i asked if it was made in China and he told me that he thought so(it sounded like he was not to familiar with the evaporators they sell)
They had sold some for 1966 and 67 he said and he had not had any negative feedback on the evaporators

Asked Long Island as well and they would not say to much other than it was made in the US(like we do not say who makes hour products)

I have a feeling that the evaporators may be the same as well as the heather cores

Scott. I need to buy the condenser as well. But first i will have the outer and inner AC assembly intact with every part.
After that i will consentrate on the other parts in the engine compartment

I have finished restoring the the outer AC assembly for my 64 coupe
I have looked at a lot of pictures and on many of the pictures of the outer AC box it looks like there is a mesh covering the backside of the evaporator
I do not have a mesh on my car(see the picture without any mesh) compared to the picture that have a mesh
I have not seen any Corvette parts supplier selling that mesh but i suppose i can make one?
Do you think that i should i put a mesh on the backside of the evaporator?
If so i hope if i place a mesh on the outside of the opening where you see the evaporator on the picture is good enough

I must say that the knowledge and help i get here on the forum is absolute great and i appreciate it very much

Claus, the AC assembly is looking good.

It is my understanding that the mesh screen is meant to catch large debris. To the best of my knowledge, GM only used a screen on the side you show in photo #2, mine was secured to the condenser with four off-white colored push-in plastic pins. The pins are pointed on one end, the "handle" end is square with a hole through the middle, the hole is just above what looks similar to a round sword hilt, which stops the pin from going any further into (between) the condenser fins than necessary. Almost unbelievably, each pin is individually numbered (1-4) on the shaft, with the following molded into the plastic (also on the shaft):

            ..N
            .LOC
            ..R

The plastic pins measure 1-3/4" long overall, the shaft section is not round like a tooth-pick, it is more like a thick sword, to squeeze between the condenser fins. The shaft section is about 1-7/16" long by 3/16" wide by 1/8" thick.

The good news is, I'm fairly confident that most NCRS judges will not dismantle your Evaporator assembly to check for correct plastic pins

Dr. Rebuild has the screen available, and he recommends using a screen on both sides of the condenser. Doc's two replacement screens are on page 50 of his catalog (DR part # 8846182 Inlet screen, DR part # 8846184 Outlet screen), but any screen cut to correct size with mesh large enough to accommodate the pin dimensions listed above should do.

I just checked, the screens are not listed on the website itself, but you can access the old Adobe PDF catalog through the website, and the screens are still located on page 50.

Happy to say that the outer AC assembly is ready to go back on the car
The factory AC parts have been the most difficult parts to get hold of for my car(some owners before me had cut the outer AC box in half)

I think that factory AC parts like the outer AC boxes and STV valve is among the most difficult parts to get hold of

                      Claus,

Your AC assembly looks great. Good luck getting it back in the car!

Thanks Scott To get the factory AC parts back together have been my main priority since i bought the car
Not that it will be used much but since my car is a factory AC car i just had to get the parts
Now i only need the inner box because some owners before me did cut a piece of the inner box off as well
I know they are making the inner box but if it a okay part i do not know?
Any here that have seen the quality of the repro inner AC box like on the picture?

                            Claus,

You can search the old catalog if you go to the OLD main page (http://www.docrebuild.com/, NOT the "new webstore" page), then click on "1953-1982 Corvette Parts" and on the next page that pops up, click on "pdf catalog" in the upper left hand side of the screen. That will take you to another web page, where you can go directly to an individual catalog page (if you know the page you want to search), or below that you can search alphabetically by whatever you can guess Doc might call the part you're looking for
