Quick question on Smog Pump usage on Chevrolet Cars

Have a question on Smog Pump usage on Chevrolet Cars. Here goes:

On the 70 Chevelle I know all solid lifter engines had the smog pump. Was the smog pump used
on the smaller horsepower engines(L34 or LS5) with automatic transmissions. Thanks in advance--Larry

According to the only emissions reference I have handy, Smog pump was used on any engine with an open element air cleaner in 1970...

William: Thanks for the response. The L34 (350hp) I have seen (Both in 70 Chevelles (w/o flipper hood) and in 70 Camaros) both had Open Element Air
Cleaners and both had no smog pump. Of course they had the TCS emission systems. Any imput from anybody else please. Thanks Larry

The specs for the 1970 Chevelle that you can download at the GM Heritage center website show that AIR was used only on the 375hp and 450hp engines.

Go to the AMA specs at the end of the pdf.

I can not shed any light on 1970 models other than Corvette, but I can tell you for 1970 Corvette AIR was used ONLY on solid lifter engines. ALL 1970 Corvette engines received open element air cleaners at the SOP (Start of Production). This changed during the model year such that by the end of 1970 MY production only the LT1 retained the open element air cleaner. I know this is confusing, but it is the way it was.

Strange as it may sound, the AMA specs are not always accurate. However, in this case, they are.

For the 1970 model year, most, if not all, Chevrolet models with hydraulic lifter engines used no AIR system regardless of transmission. Instead, most used the CCS exhaust emissions control system.

For 1968-69 things were different. Most Chevrolet models with manual transmission used the AIR system while most with automatic transmission, except Corvette and solid lifter engines, used the CCS system. All 1968-69 Corvettes used AIR regardless of engine or transmission.
