Does anybody know what battery cut-off kit is the best to install for judging on a 1996?

go to advance auto and get the KNIFE BLADE type. put it on the NEG side of battery. -

You may need a low amp fused bypass wire to keep the onboard electronics and presets alive while the battery is disconnected, not sure the knife blade ones have that?Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New MexicoComment

My personal preference is the knife blade type, and I have 45 years in the electric utility business. Electrically it doesn't matter if you put it on the + or - terminal. Make your decision based on clearance to other items on your particular installation. Every knife blade switch I have seen can be disassembled and the orientation of the blade and receiver can be reversed. Consider that if the knife blade hinges from the battery side that blade will be the same as the battery terminal. Take this into account when looking at the clearance on your installation. It may be prudent for you to reverse the direction the blade pivots from.
As far as judging is concerned -- no one cares about the style of the cut off or it's installation --- except if it fails you will lose a lot of points in operations.TerryComment

I have the knife-blade type cutoff switch installed on mine. I found it was easier to use than the knob style given the limited room where the battery is located in the 84-96. I also like the fact that when the knife-blade is lifted you know for certain that the power is disconnected. I purchased mine from a vendor that advertises in the Driveline and am pleased with the quality.Tom Weber, Jr.Comment

FWIW, I have/use the green knob version that seems to be less popular here. My application is early C3 (side posts, located in a well behind the LH seat).
What I find useful in it vs the blade type is that I can remove the knob completely, taking it with me if I leave the car somewhere. Without the knob, I get a little more anti theft confidence, in that there's not a handy way for a thief to attach the lead to the terminal. This confidence might be more in my mind than in reality.
Perhaps the blade type provides anti-theft diversion too - dunno.Don Lowe

I agree with you Don, I also prefer the green knob one hooked on the negative terminal. I have four of them on my cars and have never had an issue in all the years I have had them, maybe I'm just lucky?Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New MexicoComment

Mike, The failures of the green knob style that I have heard about are usually, but not always, reported on high horsepower, high compression engines. Another factor is that if the knob is not tightened securely it will heat up from a poor connection, hastening its demise. I have also had reports from folks who tightened it too tight and stripped the threads. Doing that can leave one stranded at an inopportune location unless one has the tools to remove it.
The added security that Don refers to is no doubt a decided advantage.TerryComment

Oh no Terry, don't tell me that, you will jinx me for sure. I have a green knob on my '67 L71, my '68 GT500KR Cobra Jet 428, my '70 AAR 'Cuda with T/A solid lifter 340 C.I., 360 HP 6 pack engine, and just put one on my 2012 ZR1. At least the ZR1 is not high compression......

I suspect of that group the ZR1 draws the least current to the starter.

Not sure about the '53-4, but most people I know who have the knife switches have bought them here. This company seems to make many different configurations for lots of battery mounting situations:

Agree with Rich.. Just installed this knife blade (Wirthco brand) from AA on my '86 and my '94 over the weekend. $20 bucks each at Advance auto. Not cheap, but saw same/similar at Carlisle for $35 bucks ea. Very easy install, though had to tilt slightly inward to avoid contact with hood... check carefully when first closing. But again, easy install and works great. Now I can park for weeks and no draw/run down batteries.Comment
