    LT1 Dipstick/SS Shields

    Help,

    For a 1971 LT1, is the dipstick natural metal finish or painted. Also not sure about the spark plug shields. They had a fair bit of corrosion on them. Thanks.

    Natural for the dipstick but the sparkplug shields you have to be a little more specific the 4 heat shields around the plugs or the radio shielding.

      Mike the tube is natural as is the dip stick. there is a colored tip at the end of the loop of the dip stick. the spark plug heat sheilds where finished with a galvinized type finish.

        Thanks Paul,

        The 4 heat shields around the plugs. We are not sure about the radio shielding. What do these look like and where are they located?

          Illustrated in your copy of the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) for your year of Corvette in the back of the book under the option code U69. If you do not have a copy of the AIM, you can get it from the NCRS store -- click on the radio button marked NCRS STORE at the top of the page.

          I believe -- working from memory -- the four galvanized heat shields were installed at Flint when the engine was built, and they will not be shown in detail in the AIM. The chrome ignition shields consiosting of two shields over the rear two spark plugs on each side, a lower "boomerang" shield on each side, a vertical shield on each side and the distributor shield, will be illustrated in the U69 section of in the AIM.

          There is a lot of good information about many things in the AIM. There is a learning curve for it, but we will help you here with that.

            Terry and Ed hit the nails on the head in this case sparkplug heat shields are galvanized but for the radio shielding as Terry stated there are all those chromed parts but there are also many smaller parts associated with this system such as brackets, wing nuts, clips etc. that would be shown in AIM describing this on line would be difficult to do.

              Two small points:

              1) The spark plug heat shields were either galvanized or zinc plated. If galvanized, they were made from "pre-punch" galvanized material and, thus, the very edges will be bare steel (and rusty by now). If zinc plated, the pieces were plated after fabrication and, thus, the edges will be plated. I believe that either type of shields were used alternately (probably depending upon the supplier);

              2) Not all of the RFI shielding was chrome plated; some pieces were stainless steel. For example, the left rear shield is usually stainless.

                Good point Paul about all the clips, brackets and wing bolts. I forgot about all that. ALL of those will be called out by part number (not that that will do much good now 40 years on) in the AIM. As I recall the illustrations on this page are pretty accurate -- which is not always the case. I think most of those small parts are available in reproduction, but it always helps to know what they are called and in general what they should look like.
