Missing vin plate on a 61 but has title and matching # engine and frame

Looking at a 61 has a clear and current title the number on the title matchs the engine and the frame. The vin plate is missing on the steering shaft. The steering shaft has a fair amount of rust and shows no signs of the vin plate. How will the price of the car be with a state vin plate. This car was in a garage for 20 plus years. Also have a copy of the title when the preveious owner bought it in 1966. Is there a legal aftermarket vin plate. I have heard that C1 vin tags have been known to fall off.

Generally depends on the laws in your state. Check with the DMV to see if/what documentation they will accept to re-tag with the original number. Probably easier if you live in the state it was last titled in... Tags have been know to fall off, but it is NOT a common occurrence and likely will involve a thorough going-over of the car to get it titled.

I had a simular problem, most states do issue replacement tags but they are nothing like the orig. There are some guys that make perfict replacements. if it is not legal in your state then you can find a state where it is legal and simply do it there. No sure if I would tell all i know to the DMV

Thanks for all the info but the deal fell through. Vin tags are a very hard thing to deal with and have many legal problems also.

Google the situation in Buffalo. Local paper is called the Buffalo News. NCRS judging in Ontario revealed a replacement tag on a NY car, just after a restoration. Owner is going after the prior owner for switching from a state number to the VIN number derived from the transmission. I'd say NY is not the state to try this in...

I don't know if it is still true but years ago in Indiana you could get a repo vin tag if you proved you owned it & was the right one & had the car checked by the police. You had to send a noterized letter from the police stating it was Ok to get a new vin tag.

I agree Tom but in the day you know that a lot of Corverttes were stolden & stripped. In the day everyone thought that Corvette motors were different than stock GM ones. In Indy. they could strip a Corvette in 10 minutes. Also back then many sellers bought Corvettes from junk yards that were stolden & stripped & restored them

They moved the VIN tag from the door jam to being spot welded to the steering column in 1960. I believe some spot welded VIN tags fell or were knocked off, it was not a big deal many years ago. This was supposed to be more of a problem with fuel injected cars due to the air cleaner assembly. Don H.

Just trying to find one of mine that went missing. Had red flocked door jams and hardtop, blue body. Disappeared from Tulsa OK.
