    63 alternator replacement

The original alternator on my black 63 car is kaput. I'm getting it rebuilt, but I'm wondering if I can put another "generic" alternator in its place temporarily. The replacement part I found is at Advance Auto. It is physically identical, but makes 61 amps, rather than the standard 37. Should I have any problems with this?

    Thanks,

Absolutely no problem, at all. Also, without too much trouble, at all, you should be able to obtain a rebuilt alternator that is configured virtually identical to the original except for "numbers".

I agree with Joe. I have a 64 with a Auto Zone 60 Amp generic alternator. Keeps you batter charged with no problem.

Thanks guys, I just changed it to the new one. Everything seems fine. I went for a ride and I think the extra amperage didn't hurt: my headlights have always been slow turning, but now they spin quickly.

I had a 61 amp on my car when I purchased it with no ill effects. I now have a restored original 37 amp.

You'd be better off with the 61 amp "guts" in the 37 amp case.
