    1960 Seat Divider Compartment Lock

Minor panic before Lone Star Regional. When I insert the key into the lock, the entire lock assembly spins. What keeps it firmly in place? The 1960 AIM doesn't show a spring clip on the back side.

    Joe,
The bezel on the outside of the glove box door holds the lock in place and there might be a notch the lock fits in on the inside of the door..
Hold the lock in position and turn the bezel to thread it on the lock
    Good luck,
    Bruce B.

There is a notch on the inside, but I was unable to turn the bezel at all; either direction. The bezel is so small, there is little to get a hold of. The last minute judging gremlins have started!

        Joe,
Try putting the bezel in place and turn the lock to get the threads started.
If it starts then try and turn the bezel. Be careful so the paint does not get chipped.

I tried that and was able to get it a little tighter, but then the lock seats in the notch and won't turn any more. It is tight enough to get me through judging if I am careful when turning the key. Thanks for the advice.

maybe place a thin washer on the top of the cylinder on the underside and grind the edges to hide? or build up a little glass underneath...

              Joe,

See pics. There is a tab on the inside of the cylinder. Insert key but don't turn to lock. With the door open, use a small screwdriver to push the tab in. It's not a tumbler pin, but a lock tab. When pushing the tab, pull the cylinder/key assy straight out.

Once the cylinder is out, you'll see the inside of the bezel is hex shaped. Take a hex bolt(of correct size) and add 2 locknuts to make it a wrench. Put it inside the bezel to tighten it up.

Then insert the tumbler/key assy.....but make sure it's not upside down-or you'll never get it out again!!! Ensure the lock tab aligns with the hole in the housing.

John Hinckley has a pic here somewhere of the hex tool they used at St Louis.

Here's the seat separator lock bezel tool used in the plant - it's octagonal, 17/32" across the flats; was made from a piece of octagonal bar stock, welded to a 3/8"-drive socket.
