C3 4 Speed Shifter

Does anyone have instructions, etc. on how to set up a 4 speed shifter for a 1978? I can get the thing to align 1-4 but I cannot seem to get it to get it to work in and out of reverse. Also, this is an original unit.. Should there be some sort of spring action to keep the shifter in the 3-4 range?

If it won't get into reverse, there are several things to check, starting with the reverse lockout rod. It is attached to the trigger on the handle and must be raised enough to clear the lockout pin at the bottom of the handle. Sometimes they slip and don't retract far enough to clear the slot for the shifter to enter. If that is ok, then it is a matter of adjusting the reverse rod to allow the slot on the shifter arm to align with the bottom of the shifter lever to allow it to slide into reverse position.

Bill, Thanks... Problem is that I can get it into reverse but not out! Is there some trick to installing these stock shifters? Seems like I need to keep all the levers aligned at neutral (as defined by that gate) while doing the install.... Joel

Absolutely correct, your shifter arms are not aligned with the neutral gate. Pull the handle into where the neutral gate should be, and align the 1-2 and 3-4 rods to match, using the adjustments on the rods.
