    65 turn signal not flashing

65 L78-The left side turn signals are not flashing when applied. It has a new switch, new wiring, new bulbs. The light, front and back comes on, and stays on, just no flash. Flash works fine when done manually. Driving lights work when on(both sides), brakes work fine when applied(both sides), Right side flashers work fine when applied. All lights come on when required, just no flash on left side. Wiring problems..AARRGGHH!!
Any help/suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thank you

Rick, do the lights appear to be the same brightness front and rear when you use the signal? If not a bad ground connection will cause this. What I like to do is turn the signal on and start wiggling connectors and then watching to see if this helps with problem( firewall, at the front socket area) . Another thing is sometimes the repro wiring harness have been known to be incorrectly pinned into the right spot on the connectors.I have also seen the socket cause some problems with directionals and park lamps.

      Rick,

Come across the same situation on my car. Had installed all of the above and right side would not flash. Experimented with a couple different flashers and got the signal to start flashing. However, park lamps/turn signal lights installed where Chinese made. Turns out the bulbs where the culprit. Other than trying different flashers, try the correctly rated bulb in the park lamps.

I agree I found out he hard way when I replaced the bulbs. They need to be the same as the original ones.

Total agreement with the above. The older type (thermal control) flasher units seem to be very sensitive to the current draw occasioned by the lamps that are used. Swap the lamps from side to side and see if the problem follows. In some applications I have had to change over to an electronic flasher unit that works regardless of the current draw thus allowing the use of LED lamps.

            Rick,
I had same problem as post #3; I had put in an elictric limited turn signal harness; still not work; replaced it with BW harness (cost twice as much) but worked fine. I say replace the total harness, sounds like you got a bad one. Good luck.

Had this very same thing happen last night about a block from home in my '64. It was the bulb to light socket connection not being good. Removed the bulb, cleaned both surfaces, reinstalled the bulb and all was well. I am also using a NOS Tung Sol flasher, the real deal GE bulbs, and 'Lectric Limited front wiring harness installed in 1992.

              Good luck,

Re: 65 turn signal not flashing

Rick - The turn signal flashers used originally on GM vehicles were fixed load flashers and designed not to flash if a bulb was burned out or if the bulb is not the bulb the system was designed for and probably if there was a poor ground. So, as other have suggested be sure the bulbs in the system are correct (correct Chinese bulb don't count, nothing causes more problems than "reproduction" parts. That's my personal opinion and probably shared from experience by many others.) and check that the grounds are good. Good luck. Pete
