Re: Very early 66 production
Unlike the standard six-month window allowed for other dated components, glass can be dated up to 12 months prior to the car's final assembly date, so the span you noted meets the judging requirement (the windshield glass configuration didn't change from '65 to '66).- Top

The only thing that may throw a wrench into the works on this particular year model is the fact that the windshield was new for the new 66 model year. A different part number and a slight physical change on the windshield itself.
I would guess that the newly released 66 windshield was probably not being made more than a few months prior to the release of the new 66 model.
Any guesses as to what the change was for 1966?- Top

Re: Very early 66 production
Morris, John, Dave,
From the "information that really doesn't matter" desk, there was a change in all windshield glass for the new 66 model.
The change was the thickness of the plastic sheet between/inside the glass. It had to do with safety (naturally) and the change was for all Chev (and probably all GM) passenger vehicles.
This is why there likely wasn't any old dated inventory from the 65 model for the new 66 model.
If I remember correctly, the sheet was increased by 1/32".
I'll see if i can find the info.- Top

Mike,
Do you suppose that had to do wioth Dr Gurdjain's (I am likely spelling his name wrong) tests on windshields? Seems I remember being told some details of those tests that I will spare all of us over breakfast.Terry- Top

Re: Very early 66 production
I found it. This was/is New Product Information for the 1966 model.
"All 1966 passenger car models have a new higher impact strength windshield glass which was accomplished by increasing the thickness of the plastic interlayer from 1/64" to 1/32". This thicker interlayer resists penetration due to controlled adhesion properties allowing the interlayer to slowly pull away from the edges of the glass at each crack, providing greater elongation before it tears.- Top
