On the outer part of the door is this small bolt with a bracket, it is opposite the window stops about in the middle. Can someone tell me what it is and what it does. I can't find it in the AIM, ST-12 or any parts suppliers

Re: Door Part Identification
Bob,
You may also need those retainers that are rusted. I have found on this 59 I have here, that they used the retainers, and also that special clip to hold the outer edge of the outer SS reveal moulding just like you have pictured.
Do your reveal mouldings have lips on both inner and outer edges along their full length?
The early SS reveal mouldings, like I have here, and suspect you have there, only had a lip on the full outside length. 56,57,58 used these also. The inner edge is flat with no lip. They are screwed horizontally into those long retainers with tiny Phillips head screws in 3 places.(see 57 AIM in link below) In 59 they cut a section out of the middle of the retainer to allow 1 clip(as you show & need) to be used to clamp down just the outer edge in the middle of the reveal. The front is held down by the Door Post, the rear by the door edge trim. IMO, this was a transition fix(bandaid) not documented in the AIM's.
Later on(59L?-62) they changed the reveal molding to only require those 2 clips to hold it with no long retainers. The reveal had lips on both the inner and outer edges along their entire length.

Re: Door Part Identification
The reveal mouldinging have a lip on the inside edge. it seems like the reveal would slide under the retainer then get screwed to the door. Have no idea what the purpose of this retainer is with the spring clip, it points at a 45 and doesn't look like it holds anything. None of the suppliers have a clue as to what I am talking about. i have attached a picture from the side of the car.Attached Files- Top

Re: Door Part Identification
Bob, So....what year is the car you're working on? Are thes "new" reveal mouldings, or your originals.
2 lips, okay, you have the later style reveals, but someone may have changed them. Those long rusted metal retainers are still there and are likely not needed, and I gather you only have one clip per door. The later design required 2 clips per door as shown in the 59 AIM.
Thos clips you have are original. That's what they used to hold the reveal. That same clip was made for the mouldings that are half round, like on the decklid trims behind the seats. That tab would be bent over and it's "spring" action would hold the clip in place. Here is a pic of the Zip part CT-96.
They used the same part for the outer reveal moldings but not the "perfect" design IMO. I think they didn't bother bending the clip tab as it was useless for the reveal as it was a odd cup shape. You can try to get it in position by bending that tab before insertion but IMO it won't hold in place.
Loosely install the clip using the screw and flat washer, place the the reveal in position. It has to grab on one edge only. I don't believe the clip can be rotated under the reveal as the reveal is too narrow.
I can see now in your first photo, that it appears only the "long" outer edge of the clip holds it in. And it appears the inner part did not hold anything.
The ones I had here had tabs unbent just like yours. They only held the outer edge, and I had to raise and twist it over the lip by turning the fastener loosely screwed in from underneath, just grabbing the outer lip of the reveal. Then I had to use the 3 screws to attach the inner flat face to the long retainers mounted on top of the door. I had only 1 clip per door.

EDIT......Correction. I edited my original post. Changes above. The width of the clip is too wide for the reveal. Only one edge holds the reveal in place.- Top
