63E outside mirror questions

I have a early 63 outside mirror and was wondering what was the gasket mounting material, plastic? and what type of head does the the mounting screw have?Was it a self tapping type?

I know that the later 63L til 67 tall mirrors had a paper gasket and a allan head screw. Thanks Ed

Ed, E63 uses a very thin rubber gasket that is only available if you find a NOS mirror. But the repro will fit just fine although thicker.
Information sheet enclosed with NOS mirror dated 3-29-62 Part No. 3821965 states the screw is 8-32X9/16. Holds the mirror base onto the bracket. Bracket held onto the door with 2 of 10-12X1/2. They go into the reinforcement.

The 8-32 x 9/16 screw is a chrome phillips head. SOme say this screw should be allen head but the originals I have seen and the NOS one on my 63 are all phillips head. John

John does the gasket have a lip around the perimeter? Guys thanks for your input Ed

Ed, The ones that came with the car had a slight hint of a lip. But you won't find that gasket very easily. Just buy a repro.

I got my correct 63E mirror from a 63 Chevy passenger car. Cheap too. So look there for the gasket and screw.
