The correct oil pan for a solid lifter 1962 (340 and 360 hp) will have the following configuration:

The bottom will have three smooth steps with the drain plug in the middle of the deepest sump and two dimples at the rear of the second step.

The sides of the pan will have one reinforcement rib approximately 6 3/4" long. It is often referred to as the "trap door" pan. There will be evidence of spot welds where the trap door baffle was installed.

Do a search on trap door and you'll find several. Be warned that there is a front seal size issue (pre 74 and after I think). Someone needs to chime in here because I don't understand it myself. Would someone tell us the depth of the seal for the correct 62 - 340 pan? Is it the same as the 61?

        Grant,

Recommend read the FAQ on how to Search. Rich M. wrote very good information on how to use key words with the Boolean search feature.

All original oil pans used on 1955-74 Corvette small blocks used a 2-1/4" front gasket radius. All of these pans had 7 digit part numbers. SERVICE pans after about 1975-76 for 1955-74 Corvette small block applications used a 2-3/8" front gasket radius. These pans all had 6 digit part numbers. Unfortunately, the part numbers usually do not appear on a pan. So, one has to check the front gasket radius before one purchases gaskets. Installed on the engine it's very difficult, if not impossible, to discern which front seal is installed. The front gasket thickness for all 1955-74 Corvette small blocks was 0.22". The front gasket thickness for all 1975+ pans as well as 55-74 SERVICE pans after about 75-76 is 0.41".

Thanks Joe, I wish I knew that before Carlisle.

              Just one quick added comment.
The 55 ONLY pan is all by itself------------------one year, one year only.
The reason is because 55 V8 blocks (both pass car and Vettes) DID NOT have the pad for an oil filter. Thus, the left rear corner of the block AND pan were a different shape. That's what makes the 55 pan a one year only. A 55 pan CANNOT be used on a 56-later block and vice versa.

The current FelPro engine gasket set I got for my 327 contains seals for both pan configurations and the proper way to measure the pan to determine which seal to use.

Fel Pro part number is KS2600.

Yes, and there actually was never a 2-3/8" front gasket radius oil pan for 1955. GM never offered such a pan in SERVICE.
