Corvette Engines History and Factory Designations

There is a mystery in my brain housing group. I have often wondered the reason Chevrolet designated corvette engines "L" etc:
ie: L79, L88, L98, LT5, LS1,2,3,4,5 and 9 How many variations are there. What were the changes, who designed the engines, and for what reason. I also wonder what might be the next designator for the 2014 C-7. I know what the vehicle numbers and letters mean. " Z" is for Zorro and "R" is for racing, and the numbers are for horsepower. What does the "ZO" as in ZO-6 mean. Then you have Gen I, II, III, and IV. Is there any thing published.
This can be confusing when attempting to explain it to my 6 year old grandson, forget about the 4 year old, he just stands around and picks his nose and looks at the result as if he just scored a new corvette. This all came up when I took Alex (#-1 grandson) to an all Corvette Show and Shine. In simple 6 year old speak he asked?
"Papa" why is it so confusing, Your red (57) car only says CORVETTE, these new ones say all kinds of things, like ZOO6, and GRAHAM CRACKER SPORT. He is a very smart boy, but is having trouble understanding what I mean when I use all of the various letter- number groups. As you can see, when retired, one has a lot of time to contimplate the unknows of the world, and entertaining wee ones, it's great. It would be a lot more entertaining for the boys if they called the corvette, some toy hero, like Capt. America or Godzilla, oh, that has been taken over by the Japanese, and Chrysler (Viper), and Ford (Cobra). I forgot, Stingray, Shark.
Just somthing to think about, as I sit here at 0400 on a Wendesday morning.

Ed: Another mystery that comes to mind is why there was never a "L" designated to one of Chevrolets most famous engines: The 302 Z28
powerplant. (DZ)?? Does anybody know? Thanks; Larry

I can't help with your questions -- at least not with any authority, but Chevrolet has a history of resurrecting former names: Z06, LT1 (or LT-1 WTF? Try explaining that one to your grandson. Even I don't understand it.) LS6 and so on. And note this recent trademark application. Want to bet we will see some of this on the C7?

Sounds like your grandson has all the makings of an excellent judge and possibly an airline pilot.

I do not know the ins and outs of it, but for Corvette, the L designation for engines appeared with the 63 models. Prior to that time, engine RPOs used numerical codes.

Chevrolet has almost always used the "L" prefix (since 1963) for engine options, as it aligns with the Engineering Releasing System protocol. There have been exceptions for the "Z" items, as those are "Special Equipment Packages", not engines, although some (like the Z/28 Camaro, Z06 Corvette and others) include a unique engine as part of the "package".

Engineering Releasing has traditionally grouped options with letters, like:

            "A" for seating-related
            "B" for exterior body-related
            "C" for heater/AC/Defrost
            "D" for body-related
            "G" for rear axle
            "J" for brakes
            "L" for engines
            "M" for transmissions
            "N" for steering & exhaust & wheels
            "P" for tires
            "T" for electrical accessories
            "U" for electrical accessories
            "V" for electrical accessories
            "Z" for special equipment packages
