    70 a-frame finish

Is the upper shaft on the a-frames painted, and washers plated, or are they all painted? Are the lowers the same as the uppers? I seem to have some painted and some natural, and some plated.

The best way to describe the finishes on the front A-arms shafts is.

    1. All large washers were natural.
    2. The bolts and lock washers were plated black.
    3. All lower shafts were natural. Mounting Nuts self-locking and bolts were plated silver and washers were natural
    4. Upper shafts were ether natural or painted black if painted then the shaft, bushings, washers and bolts where covered in black paint before they were installed on the car. The mounting nuts were silver plated self locking.

Here is a photo of a 72 with the lower shaft natural and the upper painted black.

    Hope this helps.

I should also add that the lower shaft we have noted that in 1970 the large aft nut maybe of a different configuration then the one I posted on the 72.

At the top of the nut it has a thin shoulder we had photos taken but have not seen them yet. I found a few photos on line 1 of the typical ones we see and 1 that looks similar with out the nylon inside it to what we saw on 3 late production 1970 car at the same event. All looked to be unmolested. The nut is the last one to the right.

Now you guys are going to make me try to get under the car for photos. I better do that before it gets too cold. Gosh this is so much fun, right?

Just so I am clear -- are we talking about the lower or upper nuts -- or both?

Well that makes it even harder to get to. We will see how THAT goes.

We had Doctor Patrick take some photos at Altoona of the nut Ron and I picked up on those 3 cars. It was the first time ether of us notice the different config and all 3 of those had the same nut lower shaft aft nut and 3 were July builds.

Yes, that was a remarkable display of 1970 cars, with a few very original 1969s thrown in for good measure. All the more reason for me to look since mine is, as you know, a kind of early 1970 -- unless you tell me you looked at those two April, I think it was, 1969s also. BTW, not to change the subject but the power brake booster on two of the three blew my skirt up a bit; but then you knew that. Nice job as TL too – thanks.

Not sure what was going on with the power brake boosters did not hear about that Ron and I had a full class so not much time for other items that day. I did not notice if those 69,s had the same type of nut but that's another day. Thank you for the nice comment about being TL it was actually easy had great owners that understood the system and worked with the judges and myself. In turn all went smoothly on all 3 days but it could have easily gone the other way had all of us not work together.

You had some experienced judges -- that ALWAYS helps -- and owners who know the system is next. TL still takes a lot of people skills. Those are a lot harder to learn than Corvette details. See the 1970-72 TIM&JG section for the PB booster poop. That was fall out from an off board question I received.
