    1968 Corvette Console "Insulation"

Removing the Front , EB Console & Shift Plate, I've found a lot insulation, (for lack of a better term.) It's not uniform in it's application, so I'm ASS Uming it's from work that has been done before I owned the car.

What would be a good replacement?

    Thanks,

    Bob:

I went to a carpet store and bought some of that carpet underlayment
that's sort of a blanket of carpet remnants glued together.
It's inexpensive, too. You may want to try it.

      Thanks, Russ

I just ordered new carpet, and noticed that they offered a "Box" of Sound Deadner/Heat Shield remnants for 30.00...actually, buy one get one free. I ordered them. Think that would do the trick?

        Re: 1968 Corvette Console "Insulation"

        Hi Bob,
The insulation pieces on the transmission tunnel are the same material as was applied to the very top of the cowl on the interior side.
It's what I would describe as 'jute', it's quite rough, shaggy, and loose. I believe there were originally 4 pieces on the tunnel; mainly under the shifter console and the e-brake console. They appear to have been die-cut but then torn some too in order to place them. There was a little bit of glue holding them in place.
I have tried to find a source for material that looks like this but haven't yet found one. It's similar to the jute padding on the carpet but much less dense and much more 'scraggily'.
Can you re-use what you have... might it be the original.... does the originality matter to you?
I'm posting a couple of pictures in hope that someone may see them, and suggest a source for this material.
        Regards,
        Alan

Alan, having worked in the automotive interiors business for 20+ years, I know that material as "Shoddy Pad". You can Google the term for some leads.

How thick is your material? I will reach out to a few interiors colleagues and see if I can get some potential supply leads.

            Hi Don,
Well that's certainly an apt name.
It's a little hard to judge the thickness because it appears where it was die-cut the pad was permanently compressed to 1/4" to 3/8" thickness but in other areas... really most of it.... it measures 5/8" to 3/4". And, as I said, the material in those areas is very loose.
A lead on a source would be great!
            Regards,
            Alan

That looks to be the stuff, but mine is even more "Scraggly". Probably from someone before me being in there. No, not concerned about what I replace it with. What's in there now is glued down like you say. The stuff I ordered is jute backing with the silver covering for heat dispersion. I may just use the jute. I don't have that much to replace and will keep what's already in there.

Who knows, maybe the guys in the plant in 68 only put that much in!??

Some of what you found is probably stock. The AIM shows a couple or three pieces of underbody insulation for the console and e-brake areas.
