Need Help With Original1963 Fasteners (All of Them)

I am working on a 1963 Corvette basket case. All the fasteners came in a small bucket. I know this is a big task, but I hope it will not only help me, but if I keep good records, it can help others in the future.

I know the basic bolts like the door hinges, rear valance, front splash panels and others. But, there are quite a few I am not sure of, and even more I have no idea.

Any help at all will be a plus. I know this is going to be a one at a time thing, but that is what it is going to take.

I know there a few strays in boxes as I open them up, but this is the majority of what is there.

Pictures are best if possible, but descriptions are fine. ALSO, if any of you have a picture of the inside of a door with the door panel off, it would help out a ton. Any pictures you have would be great. Send pictures to: mbusiness@comcast.net

I appreciate you guys taking the time. I know you are all very busy.

    Thanks for the help,

    Monte

EDIT: I tried to label the bolts, but it looks like I need to make it a little bigger next time.

      Pete,
I know it will eventually get done. I remember a lot of them from a 63 I did years ago. The bump stops, the door hinges, the rear valance, the splash shields, the hood hinges, the hood latches, the radiator support, fuel lines and brake lines and a few more, but that is just a drop in the bucket. No punn intended.

I figure if each guy that did a 63 remebers where one goes and lets me know, it just might get there. I have a number of friends with 63's. I wish they lived closer, but it is just a good reason to go over and see some of them.

      Even one would help.

Here is the other picture with sizes. The forum will not allow me to edit the top post. So,here it is.

        Monte,
This will take a bit more effort on your part but evaluate my suggestion. Along side the picture of each bolt, number it for identification and identify it's head markings, grade, bolt size and length. This would make the photos have more identity to us looking at it to give ya some input. Just a photo without any more is tough to identify on a computer screen.

Re: Need Help With Original1963 Fasteners (All of Them)

Monte, You'll find that most of the 5/16 bolts with integral washers w/teeth are for the hood hinges, and latches, and the radiator support has 5/16 with flat washers and split locks and have the WB1 I believe. and the radiator upper support bracket will have (3 )5/16 w/ integral washers no teeth on washers, maybe RBW. radiator fan shroud will have 5/16 hex head bolt and flat washer and split lock washer, maybe WB. the bolts that attach horns are 5/16 hex head UR head marks with star washers.

The 1/4 bolts- your ground strap bolts are a 3/8 recessed hex head ,self tapping and have stars washers. on your radiator support you'll find one self tapping for the ground strap w/star washer.

Your spare tire tub has (4) self tapping 5/16 recessed head bolts and have a flat washer that is not part of the bolt.

Your lower shock mounting bolts are a 5/16 hex head bolts with washers w/teeth these are alittle longer than hood bolts about 1 to 1 1/4 inch.

I will look at the other bolts later and see if I can help with them I am sure I can I just finished a complete resto on my 63 conv.

The fine threaded 3/8 hex head bolts grade 8 maybe be for the rear half shafts at the wheel end. and the upper control arm shafts use a fine threaded 3/8 hex head with the big concaved washers and split locks and the lowers shafts use a 7/16 fine hex head w/ the big washer and split locks.and the front lower a/arm also uses a fine threaded 7/16 with washer and split locks, on the metal block type retainers. the rear lower control arm mount uses a big fine threaded bolt w/ self locking nut, 5/8 th?

PLEASE NOTE: I am going from memory, someone please correct me if I made some eras.

Re: Need Help With Original1963 Fasteners (All of Them)

              Ed,

Thank you very much. It is a great start to the issue. I have the half shaft to trailing arm bolts already put away. Bolts like the door hinge, and a few of the others that I know where they go, I just left them off to save time and effort for those helping.

I have put a few 63's together over the years, but I cannot remember like I used to. As far as the 5/16 with integral washers, I left them in the picture because they go so many places. The longer ones go to the seats if I am not mistaken. But there are other places for them as well.

you information on the radiator support and upper bracket was one of the areas I was really worried about. so, thank you for taking care of that right off the top.

Anything you can do is appreciated. I will try to get the other picture titled with bolt sizes as soon as I get a chance.

The small fasteners is really what I am worried about. But, I figured lets take care of this bigger stuff first and we can handle the small stuff later.

              Congrats on your convertible.

Just so you know. I posted the newest picture with sizes on it in my second post of this thread. For some reason the forum will no longer let me edit my first posting on this thread.
                thanks again for the help.

Re: Need Help With Original1963 Fasteners (All of Them)

Monte, the 1/4 20 x about 1" bolts with 3/8 hex heads 4 of them are for the hood support, I believe the top two are cad. plated and bottom two are blk. phosphate. I was thinking about the smaller 1/4 x20 3/8 head bolts were the bolts for the horn relay, voltage regulator, they were self tapping tyle bolts.

5/16 (3) X 1 WB and one L headmark appear to the bolts that attach radiator support through the wheel opening, I Think there are two on each side.

7/16 14x1 M head marks look like the bumper bolts sizes for the front?

5/16x24 x1 grade 8 bolts 4 of them are the fan clutch to water pump bolts

The bolts you have bump stops for front control arm I believe are correct and there are also rear bump stops that use the same type of bolts.

The bolts that secure the strut rod bracket are a 3/8x16x1 or 1 1/4 my car has a WB head mark. but if you have 4 with the same size likely ae the ones. there are also (4) 3/8x16x1 or 1 1/4 bolts taht secure the rear diff. the the support. maybe RBW ?

3/8x16x 2 5/8 does you car have p/strg.? possible bracket boltThere is also a small 1/4 20 x3/4 3/8 recessed head bolt. that holds the heater hose bracket to the lower alt. brace.I don't see that bolt.

5/16X18X1/2 no head marks look to be the e/brake cable clamp bolts to frame.

Monte keep in mind that some of the bolts with the same lengths and different head marks may hae been that way as the buckets of bolts the used were not always the same. I am sue you know this. there are two bolts that I have seen in the pic but can't place them.(3/8x16x103/8 cad plated bolts w/washers) if I can remember I will post. I did not make into garage its a cold rainy night here in the northeast and getting dark early.

                      Ed,
No power steering. This is not my other 63. I wish it was here. It is up at my Mom's place tucked away in the hanger for the winter. Too far away to go look. One big state over. This car is a solid lifter motor car. The block has been decked, so I do not know what it originally was.

The holes in the drivers fender are very well used (F.I. air cleaner), high rev tach, speed warning, passenger side exhaust manifold has been replaced, Has 64-65 radiator support in it. Front end has some damage, so it might have been replaced when that was repaired.

Bottom line is it looks like it might have been F.I, but as we all know, this stuff might have just been changed out at some point. I am going 340 with it for now as I have everything to do it. I do have a spare F.I. unit, but no air cleaner, exhaust manifold and all that.

On this thread, what you have done, and with Tim Ehlers sending some actual lists, I am making quite a bit of progress.

I just want you and Tim to know how much I appreciate the time you have taken. I hope I can pass on what you guys have done for me to someone else.

                              Ed,

                              No,
Tim has a 66 roadster that when he took it apart, he drew each bolt and how washers went on them. He did not get the whole car done, but he got quite a bit of the chassi. for example: A drawing of the bumper bolts. The sizes, which washers were on each bolt and which ones had lock washers, flat washer, and nuts. Itis just a drawing, but a ver clear one.

He has been helpful in specific areas.

The 66 Paragon bolt list I got from someone years ago. I do not eve remember where it came from.

The vendor have been a halp. I have put all their pictures and my description in one document now. Much easier to read.
