    Installing sound deadening/heat shield

Restoring my interior. I have carpet that came with the heat shield/deadening already attached. The "Shiny" side would be facing DOWN when the carpet is installed in the cockpit. I've also purchased deadening/heat shield for the rest of the interior.

That said, I'm looking at pictures of restorations, and the heat shield is being installed with the "Shiny" side UP... Who's right or wrong here?

    Thanks for the help!

    Bob -

I see this all the time, and always wonder why. The full benefit of foil-faced heat insulation is only realized when the foil side is toward the heat source, to reflect most of the radiated heat before it gets to the insulation or mastic material. Heavy mastic panel-damping material (like Dynamat, as used in high-end custom sound installations) and foil-faced heat insulation are two entirely different animals.

OK... So, like I thought, all face down. And you're saying what I have won't deaden much sound?

        Bob,

The product you have will offer almost no sound deadening however will help with defraying the heat..

As far as I know, original carpet installations did not have any sort of foil-faced insulation. It was simply carpet with a jute underlayment

            Hi,
The underlayment on my 71 has quite a thick rubber layer that the jute material is glued? to. Was the intent of this rubber layer to help with deadening the road noise coming through the underbody?
It was used in all the carpeted areas except for the piece on the steel bulkhead behind the seats. On the piece of carpet for the rear compartment floor, (coupe), there are 2 pieces; the piece on the floor is loose, but the piece for the rear compartment bulkhead was glued to the carpet.
            Regards,
            Alan

Sound deadening at best with some heat deferral. The footwell jute appears someone has been there before. Not sure about rear compartment.

My 1970 has a black mastic like material (no foil) under the jute in the footwell areas. It is hard to tell how extensive it was because it is not in as good a shape as Alan's photos. I haven't had the back carpet out, so I have no idea what is there.

                  Hi Michael,
I'm pretty sure that no one was there before I took the carpet out.
I wiped the footwell and wheel house pieces with Fantastic. It turned the footwell rubber very solid black as you see, but left the wheel house rubber with that mottled appearance.
                  Happy Thanksgiving!

                  Alan
