1959 Has No Vin Tag Attached

Looked at a 1959 Corvette and discovered it had no vin plate in the door jamb. Since it is held on by screws, this probably is not the first case of one missing. What is the procedure to have another made?

Also FYI, I saw the title of the '59 and there is a mistake in the vin number on the title, a 5 was placed where the S should be. Just a typo but I bet this could cause some major problems since it does not have the original vin plate. Thoughts?

Did you look on the steering column?

State law is variable. Some states have a renumbering process.

      Hi Tom,

Vin is not on steering column in 59, but I did look anyway. Screws are there on door pillar but no tag. Is there someone making replacements beside going to state DMV? Seller had no idea as this was her late husbands car.

I have seen the "5" instead of the "S" mistake more than one time. A long time ago, we got that fixed (in NY) with a pencil rubbing on paper that was held over the vin tag. Wonder if that would still fly in NY...

5 instead of S is a common mistake. all i have ever done to change this is go to the BMV and give them the correct vin#. i never have needed to bring a car back to be inspected when i asked for a vin to be corrected. last vin# i had corrected was recorded VB555001--- for over 40 years.

State issued VINS can be obtained, but you would want the CURRENT owner to jump through those hoops. Cars with VIN plates removed USUALLY have a skeleton in the closet somewhere.

                  Terry,
I bought a 55 Chevy out of KY a while back and it had the "5" and "S" problem.
It was noticed when I had the out of state inspection done. Ohio BMV understood and corrected it when the new title was issued, but that was a long time ago.

I really don't believe this is true. I have seen so many in my more than 40 years of working on these things. I believe it is just commonplace for them to be gone. They usually were removed for paint and lost or just never returned. The vast majority of those were perfectly legitimate cars with no HISTORY at all.
