    70 LT-1 upper radiator hose

Can someone provide the correct part number and better yet, an image of the correct hose? My cousin has one and the hose does not fit correctly.

    Thanks!

Re: 70 LT-1 upper radiator hose

I am at work and don't have access to all/any of my reference materal nor the original hose from my LT1 -- that said I am thinking that at some point that hose number and configuration changed -- I just can't remember when.

FYI: there is information on the part number in the AIM and the TIM&JG, and when I can I will provide a photo of the hose that originally came on my LT1.

The original hose was supposed to be GM #3959554. However, I believe this was a hose to be used with the GM #3155316 ALUMINUM radiator. I think that some early 1970 LT-1 did use this radiator or, at least, were originally scheduled to use this radiator.

For the most part, I believe 1970 LT-1 used a copper/brass radiator. For this radiator I believe the correct hose is GM #3946852.

        All,
I believe the judging Guide calls for the #3946852 as mentioned. I always wondered about that is my July built 70 LT-1 has a #3959554 TM upper hose. I'm 99% sure it is original.

            Joe,
It is a copper/brass radiator. I will submit this info to the 70/72 re-write team for discussion. In addition I also have a discrepancy with the manual on the RH smog hose that I need to clarify. JG says #3947740 JA and I have #3946007 RP.

OK, now we know that the 3959554 is designed for use with the copper/brass radiator. It is the hose that GM says was used for 1970 LT-1.

For 1971-72 LT-1 the hose was the GM #3946852 and all 1971-72 LT-1 certainly used the copper brass radiator (except ZR-1).

Inasmuch as we now know that the 3959554 is for use with the copper/brass radiator, I cannot understand why 1970 was different than 1971-72. This is especially true since the 3959554 and 3946852 are configured very differently.

                Joe,
My May built 71 LT-1 has a #3946852 upper hose on it as you suggest. I don't have full photos of either hose but from what I can see the routing of the #554 and the #852 are very similiar.

                  Here we go:

                  Rad hoses 011.jpg

                  Rad hoses 013.jpg

The hose on top in the first picture is the one that came on the car - the note attached to it is labeled #3946852, but the part number appears nowhere on the hose. I either pulled that number from the AIM or the Corvette Parts Book, in I would guess 1985 to 1987. Neither of those hoses in photo #1 have a part number on them, but they are identical in every visible way. The only thing on both hoses is the white stripe, and on the original hose near one end are some no longer readable letters that said IIRC RAD. Ironically, or maybe not, that end was attached to the thermostat housing. Go figure. I wish I could remember where i got the one that is on the car, but I can not.

BTW: These hoses are labeled because I used to use them in a "show and tell" type of judging school. It is way too long a story to tell why I no longer do that and telling that story would get us way off topic. Suffice it to say that was then and this is now.

                  Rad hoses 017.jpg
In the image immediately above is the hose labeled #368685, and the label (shown below) says "current service replacement". Current when? Likely 1985 or 1987. If you look closely at the above photo there is a small crook in the hose near the radiator that is not in the hose installed on the car -- the hose i labeled #3946852.

                  Rad hoses 018.jpg

Now that I have thrown another part number into the mix, and not solved a thing because I don't know the number of the original hose. It is time to have some fun. Go to it. I am prepared to learn something.

Re: 70 LT-1 upper radiator hose

Just to throw some more stuff onto the pile: There is a red code on the #368685 hose. Below is the best picture of it that I could get. I believe it reads 4BH6DF, however the fourth character could be a partial 8 or B, and while this series of characters is repeated again near one end of the hose the molded bend at that end makes the characters all the harder to read. Of course the red stripe and the added crook as well as the obvious part number make this hose easy to distinguish from the original.

The GM #3959554 hose, the one that GM says was used for 1970 LT-1, was discontinued in January, 1979 and replaced by GM #3768956. The latter hose was originally released in 1958 and used for 1958-69 truck applications. It's been discontinued without supercession.

The GM #3946852 was used in PRODUCTION for most 1971-72 Corvettes with small block and copper/brass radiator as well as all 1973-75 Corvettes with small block. The GM #3946852 hose was discontinued in July, 1980 and replaced by GM #368685. The latter hose was originally used in PRODUCTION for 1st design 1976 Corvettes. It's still available from GM.

I guess I didn't say enough. I know where you are going Ron, but if the configuration and red stripe are obvious enough to make it not TFP, how much more do we need?
