Mold Protection WA & OR areas

    Howdy everyone,

I just moved from So Cal to Des Moines, WA and have a place near the Puget Sound. I asked one of my local mover what I should be concerned about with my car the garage (i.e. mice, etc). He said mold is big problem up here in OR and WA. Any input and suggestions to protect by '69 coupe?

    Thanks,

    Don

    Don,

A large store bought container of desicant sitting on the rear storage area should keep your '69 stay nice and dry inside. Just check on it from time to time as it will fill up with moisture.

I've lived in the Puget Sound area my whole life and have never had a problem with mold. If your garage is dry, even if it's not heated, you shouldn't have an issue with it.

Raising the temperature of the air reduces relative humidity, so heating is one solution. The other is a dehumidifier, but many won't work if the ambient temperature is less than 60-65F because the condenser keeps freezing up.

I too have never had a problem with mold but the desicant keeps the interior drier and hopefully reduces the ill effects on the dash and wiring components caused by any dampness.

Welcome to the neighborhood! I lived in Des Moines for a long time, I'm up the street in Normandy Park now. I have always kept the garage heated because with weather like we have had lately, things tend to get damp. If there is no heat, how about a small boat heater for the interior? Keep the garage doors closed always, mice and rats love to come in.

I may need to try something I've never used. My car was originally sold in Canada and came with a block heater. I found an original one on ebay in the box a few years ago and had it installed per the AIM...Don

Don, southern Cal to the northwest. Wow. Just drive your '69. I have friend that lives in the northwest. He has never mentioned a concern about mold and his '68. He drives it maybe 2/3 times a month.

Don, I lived on Camano Island and if the car is garaged there should not be problem. Cars outside for a long time can tend to grow green stuff along the molding edges if not cleaned with soft brush. I moved back across the state, to cold for any mold.

I've lived in Olympia for the past 12.5 years and haven't had a mold or mildue problem with any of my collector cars ('71 Corvette, '70 GTO, '69 4-4-2 vert and '68 4-4-2 vert). They stay inside pretty much during the wet months - my shop isn't heated and neither is my garage - and I just haven't had a problem with that sort of thing.

That will do nothing for the issues you've mentioned.

You are a lucky, lucky guy. I have been in California since 1965......but I think it is time to breathe ''FRESH AIR''. Opps, I just read that Washington air is now filled with sweet smoke. You are still in one of the most beautiful areas of the US. And what a great road tour area.

Welcome to the northwest Don. I live in Gig Habor and have never had a problem with cars stored inside. My boat is another story. I keep a 60 watt light bulb on in the winter and a small fan running to eliminate mildew inside the cabin. If you are concerned about mildew/mold this will prevent it from forming.

you can buy a low grain refrigerant dehumidifier form a commerical manufacturer like Dri-ez or Phoenix. They are expensive but work great. If the building is made of wood and it is wet or damp you can use a desiccant unit. The desiccant unit does not depend on temperature to work. Joe
