    Bogus Vettes for sale.

I have a friend that's looking for a first time Vette and came to me as he thinks I know something about Vettes, Ha Ha,. One thing I do know is I don't know as much as I would like to. Anyway, he found this add on Vettehound and wanted my opinion. It looked suspicious to me, too good to be true. The car looked pristine, 65 convertible, red on red 327 (http://www.vettehound.com/geo/classi...php?a=2&b=7318) and then I noticed that it had over 24000 hits and has been listed for over 7 months. Then my friend, Jim, tells me that he could not talk to the person directly, only through Vtttehound. They had responded through Email that it was a divorce and she had moved to Scottland blah blah. This was sounding like a true scam. I told Jim it stunk to high heaven and he thanked me and said he was going to play her along for a while, for curiosity, I said for goodness sake don't give her any mony. He won't but likes to mess with bad apples. Does anyone know what this scam is about????? I also found a 68 L88 listed for less than 20K on this site.

    HI dale

I don't understand how people continue to fall for this crap. I have had intelligant(but missing common sense) friends send money sight unseen to these scammers! I don't know why a legit website would leave up a blantant ad for so long. The "seller" probably has collected untold deposits off this ad

I have seen this as well in newspaper ads where they are selling a car or truck for way under market value. You can only contact the seller by email. I believe that this is a way for someone to collect a database of email clients who fall into a certain demographic and then sell their collected lists.

Here's another scam my fairly smart friend fell for when selling a car:
        1. Car sells for $40k
        2. Buyer sends nice looking but fake bank check for $42k
        3. Asks seller to send $2k to "shipping" company
        4. Even thought he deposited the check in his bank and waited a couple of days before he sent the money, about a week later when actual check wound its way back to the originating bank, it was discovered to be fake.

Naturally, he never heard from the "shipping" company or the "buyer" again.

Nice looking 65. The option list shows disc brakes, whoever wrote it does not know that 65 was the first Corvette to have disc brakes and was included in base price as standard equipment. Rebate money was given for buyers that wanted drum brakes as long as the supply lasted. Show your friend the NCRS Driveline adds for Corvettes for sale by members, just might find what he wants.

You see most of these scams on Craig's List. A few years ago it was supposedly a serviceman already stationed overseas who was being transferred and could'nt take tha car with him, so he had to ship the car back to the U.S. There were several of these types of stories and as any good used car dealer would do, I checked them out. Since the car had to come back, I would ask them to ship it to any base, let me inspect it, and I would provide payment to their agent upon proof of title. Needless to say, none of them took me up on my offer.

The rules to checking these things out are to not spend any money. Don't spend a lot of time as it is probably fake. Stop contact once you catch them in a lie. Report it to the site administrator.

This is key to thwarting any scam, whether auto related or not, particularly when, like in the "shipping company" scenerio above, there is no good reason the buyer can't send his money directly. The milisecond I hear a request that I spend my money to supposedly get something far more valuable, my BS meter pegs. Someone called me one day with a supposedly great personal injury case - the only slight problem was he was in jail for some unjust reason, and just needed bail money before he could come let me handle his great case. I hung the phone up before he finished his sentence.

I had a similiar situation on a well known auction site. I had been interested in finding a '68 Firebird for a few years. I found one pop up, a '68 400 with auto, wheels with redlines, dark green, black vinyl top, black interior and the pictures showed a mint car, with the license plate obscurred which is common. Price was about $6,000 low. I checked it out and was told the car was shipped to Portugal from VA. the past few days as the owner had been transferred with his job. Once in Portugal he became aware there was going to be a large duty, $4K IIRC, if the car was in country more than a month, therefore the low price. (Didn't make sense to discount the car more than the cost of the duty??) "He" told me shipping to US port was $1K via Lufthansia. Since it really smelled I contacted the auction site and it was pulled.
