Double clicking sound on acceleration and deacceleration

What are possible causes of a double clicking sound heard on hard acceleration and deacceleration? This is a metallic sound, almost like a clock ticking. There are two distinct clicks heard both when accelerating and deaccelerating It is hard to localize where it is coming from. The car is a 69 427/400 4 speed with side pipes. I initially thought it was from the side pipe, but could be rearend, or even clutch or transmission, doesnt seem to be coming from the motor, but maybe it is being transmitted through the exhaust. Did you take a look at the rear differential carrier mounting cushion? Paragon 5751K

Check your drive shaft and axle u-joints. Check your front Diff. or pinion bushes. Check your rear axle bearings.
