70 TCS Temp Sending Unit Wire

Was the TCS temp sending unit wire left bare or should it have the black cloth type insulation on it?

    TIA,
    Mike

    Mike

On my '71 the temp wire on the passenger side does not have any cloth insulation. On the driver side it has cloth insulation but it does not cover the entire length of the wire. I have had my '71 since it was 8 months old and I have not changed either. Hope this helps.

Mike, looks like alot of extra wire in the pass.switch. I don't recall my 72 having that much extra wire like that, is it the routing correct? AIM may show. and no heat insulation on my switch either.

          Hi Mike,

FYI-The heater hose clamps should be tower type

My 1970, which I have owned since new, has no covering on the green wire on the passenger side, and a black tube type coveriing on the driver's side.

The long bundled green wire on the passenger side in your photos is not TFP, as others have suggested. I have noticed that some 1970 to 1972 Corvettes have a connector in that green wire, closer to the wire harness on the IP. Others do not have that connector. So far I have found no pattern to the use of that connector.

The driver's side green wire has nothing to do with the TCS system, but everything to do with the temperature reading on your instrument cluster.

              Hi Terry,
              Me again...
              71 here, with the connector.
I believe I've seen cars in which that wire has been run through the heater hose clamp mounted on the heater box. I've thought that was done to hold it away from the exhaust manifold/head pipe.
              Possible?
              Regards,
              Alan

I have seen that routing as well Alan, but I am not sure what was actually done at St Louis. If I were driving the car I certainly would move that green wire, but it shows well for pictures where it is.

Re: 70 TCS Temp Sending Unit Wire

Mike my original owner 1970's wire to the passenger side temperature sensor is very much like like the photo of Terry M's. I found out very quick after buying my new 70 when I left it idling for several minutes when the idle speed increased. The temperature sensor sent the message to the TCS solenoid to open up the full time vacuum advance to help the engine cool. When I discovered my 70 was not getting 100% full time vacuum I bypassed the the TCS with new vacuum line directly from the carb to the distributors vacuum unit to eliminate the function of the TCS system. Has been this way for over 42 years now. Better gas mileage and reduced engine temperature in stop and go traffic.
