    Donald,

My bet is on a twisted main shaft, that's why in late 1963 the new Muncie transmission has a finer splined main shaft.

Are the mainshafts for 57 to 63 T10s interchangable? I know the splines are the same size and will take an early vette 4 7/8 spicer yoke. Any differences?

That's a good question. I'm starting the hunt for a good mainshaft for the T10-1D transmission. If I can't find one then I'll have to find out if the one from the T10D-1 will work. If so, I guess I'll have to rob it. I had hopes of one day reuniting the 63 T10 with the original car. I put an ad in the driveline way back and on the forums. But no luck.

Exactly. The OP states the yolk will only go in approx. 3". If you look at the picture above, there's an obvious twist at that point on the main shaft.

I'VE got a call into Larry at D&L. I see one listed on their website, if its correct then I just go ahead and pull the transmission back out and replace the mainshaft. I'm glad it's my 1960 and not my 1966. I put the engine and transmission into the 60 as one unit, but looking at it on my lift, it looks like I can get it out. Also, I sure glad I have a lift!!!!!

Well I got my transmission back out and apart and as you guys said, there was a definite twist. A couple of picture attached. The twist is so little that my old eyes could not see it when I first put the transmission together. But the slip yoke knew!!!

              Thanks for all the help.

Re: C1 (1960) driveshaft install issue

Just checked my 61 trans about to go in and guess what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paid a good bit for that trans.

I have several T-10s and a couple of main shafts that I tried the yoke on. It was apparent the only shaft that was twisted was the one about to go in the car.

                This post was so timely

As an answer to your previous question regarding T-10 mainshaft interchangibility, there were at least two versions of the coarse spline version, one used with the '57-60 cast iron case units and A SECOND DESIGN USED '61-63. I forget the specifics now, but as I recall, it also involved one or more of the gears as well.

Re: C1 (1960) driveshaft install issue

As many of these trannys were rebuilt, is there a way of telling which shaft you are looking at when in an assemblyed trans?

Not really except that if it has it's original parts, generally the Aluminum case trans was second design and the CI versions up thru '59 were first design If it's a '60, you really would have to take a look inside with someone who knows what they are looking at.
