Have an early 1960-270hp and need to know if all tach drive units had heat shield? JG talks about 58 generators and then says small heat shield is used to protect tach drive. Is this for 58 or all 58-60's? Thanks in advance

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
Jerry,
My early (November 59) 245hp has one. I can't swear that it is original or not. I read the section in the JG that you mentioned. I think the comment about the shield refers to 58-60. The sentence about 58 is just that it mounted directly to the manifold. Or at least thats the way I read it.

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
Do you have a photo of this heat shield. My '59 #881 doesn't have one but it could have been removed at some time. I also can't find one in any photo in any book I have including Noland's. There is no mention of it in the judging guide either as far as I can see.

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
My early 58, vin 297, had the small heat shield due to the 'U' gen mount being bolted directly to the manifold. Later in 58, the generator was mounted with a flat plate to move the generator up and forward to prevent fan belt from rubbing on lower radiator hose. The generator pulley changed also and was spaced forward to aid in the fan belt issue. Water pump and crank pulleys also changed to match up. Don't recall seeing an original heat shield on the late 58 to 60 generators, the flat plate spacer probably solved the heat problem.

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
I have not seen it in the AIM. I haven't looked at Nolan Adams' book yet. It was on my 60 when I bought it, but as I said in an earlier post, I have no clue whether its correct or not. However, hopefully someone will chime in that it was eliminated after the change in '58 model year that you mentioned. If so, then I will take the one on my car off.

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
Got confirmation that at least at the Texas Regional a 60 without the shield did not take a deduct, so I'm taking mine off.

Re: C-1 Generator heat shield
Don,
i don't have my notes handy, but from memory, the heat shield was used in 1958 with right hand side hood supports and with the generator U support mounted to the exhaust manifold without the later mounting plate.
Later cars had the hood support relocated to the left side and utilized a mounting plate to the exhaust manifold.
