This question is for those with years of experience and have "seen it all" at some point in time. Being a rookie owner and restorer I can not understand why someone would drill three 3/8" holes spaced across the rt. dash support with the center hole drilled dead center through the trim tag as the pics show. I realize the damage is done as far as the trim tag goes but should these holes be filled or left alone. This is a frame off, detailed resto but not a high end collectable car. It will be a driver. Thanks to all for your input and suggestions.

I agree with Dick; but because it is a coupe, could be it had after market AC bolted there in the past??

If they had to drill a hole in the trim tag, thankfully they didn't drill through
the numbers or letters that contain interior and exterior information.

As you state the damage has been done, the most compelling...trim tag. No way will tag be correctable. Wouldn't try to fill the other holes as well. Believe I would cosmetically treat those areas but leave holes. There would be more "s'plaining" to do should you try to fill.

I would guess hang on AC unit too. Not sure how it would judge. I would think it would pass. What do I know ! ? LOL

Trivia: When Chevrolet installed air on a 1957 Chevrolet (a Bel Air for example), they drilled a hole for a control cable. Just happened to go through the "Trim Tag" already on the firewall. Not sure about '58, but I think that was the only year they placed the tag so low and so close to the distributor.

I agree with those that say it should pass with appropriate cosmetic deducts.

But I'm surprised nobody has pointed out that it has the somewhat rare 1965 "type 2" STYLE format; ie. 65__437, rather than by far the more common early 1965 "type 1" format 65__19437, used from the start of St.Louis body production until approximately Nov. 24th 1964 (D24 date code). I've seen sporadic uses of this short format used from SOP until the longer format faded away.

Even the NCRS Trim Tag Authentication Vol 1 bible makes no mention of this anomaly, but I'm sure the senior judges have seen this and know that it's not typical of the entire production run, but acceptable (and even preferred) on the early '65 S-bodies.

D6 date is the first day of St.Louis body tags after the strike ended. Guessing by my VIN 01487 D6 S280 coupe (and the D6 S282 of another member), your VIN is probably in the early 01500's.

Correct Wayne. VIN is 01551, and thanks for confirming the build date. It is somewhat a relief to know that it could still pass after being hacked up.

If you ever bring your Corvette to a Regional or National, for any reason, get in touch with me. I would love to use it in an Advanced Judging Seminar. The "features" you have posted would make a great topic for the C2 section of my class. We could have so much fun.
