    Basic Judging Questions

One of our judges has suggest me starting to judge. I would like to learn more about it. Earlier a few of our member explained the judging of originality enough for me to get the basics.

I do have a few more questions.

For example: I have an original 72. Originality wise, the car is pretty much there. So, for instance are the originality points just given if it all the way it came from the factory.

It is a California car, so the worse thing that happened to it is things like someone blacked out the fender wells years ago. How is the judged for condition?

My radiator is original but is a little dirty from regular road time. The schroud is just like it should be. My guess is if I took it off and washed it, it would look almost brand new. How is that judged? The A/C manifold is NOS. It looks correct, you cannot see the dated on the lower fitting, so my guess it is accepted with no problem. I cannot think of anything else that is not original.

    How is condition judged.

There is no rust or anything like that anywhere on the car.

What is the specific wording on how to judge condition?

Is there books that I can buy for getting the basic idea of what goes on. Is there something I can look at before buying the video set. Just to get an idea?

    Thanks,

    Monte

Plus, this will give me an idea on how the car will do come judging.

    Re: Basic Judging Questions

Monte, congratulations on your decision to become a judge. It is a satisfying preoccupation. You must understand that becoming an experienced judge is a process and not an event. You should decide what year or years you'd like to judge. Once you make that decision, purchase and study the NCRS Judging Guide and the Judging Reference Manual. During your studies, make it a point to travel to regional meets and volunteer to be an observer judge. Listen and learn from more knowledgable judges in the area of your interest. Judging will really cause you to enjoy our society even more.

    Good luck.

Monte, Tony gave you great advice. Join the nearest Chapter, start going to meets (Chapter or Regional), and volunteer as a Observer Judge. You will soon see what is involved. Good luck, Don H.

Your questions about point assignment can be answered by looking at the judging sheets, which may be downloaded at https://www.ncrs.org/membership/scoresheets.html

Deductions for originality are explained in the NCRS Judging Reference Guide:

CDCIF shall be recognized as the process for determining the extent to which a component being judged conforms to our judging standard.

Originality: The extent to which a component being judged conforms to the judging standard in the following areas:

C Configuration - manner in which components are shaped, molded, cast or machined. Part number, casting mark/logo should be considered part of the configuration
D Date - degree to which the component date conforms to the logical sequence of manufacture and typically observed GM supply sourcing intervals. Date may be distinguished by means other than being stamped, cast, etc., into a component
C Completeness - degree to which the component is totally present
I Installation - degree to which the component is installed correctly
F Finish - degree to which the component surface finish, gloss, texture, color, tint and type conform to our judging standard

We look forward to having you as a future judge.

          Hi Monte,
I too encourage you to become involved in judging.
You'll be able to learn a great deal from the more experienced judges that you observe or judge with.
You'll soon be able to feel comfortable being a member of a judging team. This is a VERY GOOD thing because, especially at the Chapter level events, more judges are almost always needed and WELCOMED!
          Regards,
          Alan

            Monte,
The NCRS Judging retreat in Dallas is a great opportunity to learn. Registration may now be closed but check with Roy Sinor to see if you can attend.
You will learn more in those two days than you will in 4 regional meets. Its by far the best learning tool NCRS offers its membership.

              Jamie,

Roy does not know me from Adam. I will ask for sure, but is it fair.

I need to say "Thank you again guys" for the vote of confidence in this matter. I will ask and let you know how it comes out.
