    61 Issue with Directionals

    Question

My directionals do not function.. I pulled the harness apart in the stering colum and cleaned all connections.
I replaced the flasher with new old stock TUNGSOL AP373S. Now when you put the directional either left or right.
All 3 lamps ( 2rear left and one front) come on solid and the indicator arrow on the dash comes on solid green.
And the exact same if you put the right directional on all 3 lamps on solid and dash arrow is green.
But they do not flash ?

    What am i missing ?

    Thanks

Bill what was the flasher that was installed on car before you replaced? sometimes the 373 flasher does not like to flash with 1157 bulbs. If your car has 1034 bulbs the 373 flasher will flash at a normal rate. 1157 bulbs may flash but will will do so slowly.

From what your saying its sounds like the flasher. try a 552 flasher from the auto parts store. or stop by my shop I believe I have a 552 you can try.

William, the AP373S flasher is the wrong one for your car the correct one is AP373V. and like ed said you should have 1034 lamps. Kevin (775)

        The old one was a Tung Sol536 -12 V.
SO i guess i bought the wrong one with an AP373S i thought that was the one for 3 lamps ( there is only 2 tabs on it)

Is there way to test the flashers with a battery and a meter ?

And thanks ED i will see if i can get one if not i will come by. Also i just replaced the headlight switch and that fixes the issues with the dash not dimming and brake lights not working at all.
I also did find one wire when i puleed the harness out of the colum apart ( pink wire was not making good contact at all in white connector.) so getting there with the small electrical gremlins.
And i was able to pull apart the two courtsey light door switches and clean and rebuild the insides so they now work great as far as turning the light on.

        Thanks

Bill, the 373 flasher you have will work if you want to change out the bulbs to a 1034's. , problem with this is the 1157's are a brighter bulb and are seen easier. the 1034's are slightly dimmer.

Keep the 373s flasher if you plan on having your car judged it not quite correct , but it such a small point value.

Yes i am going to have it judged.
I thought i bought the correct nos one i guess not.
Going to go try the 373 but i think it is bad...
Also going to check the bulbs, Thakns

Ok so i put the 373 in and it flashes real slow like once every two minutes.
So i at least proved out the wiring and so on , so just have to find the correct Flasher.
              Thanks

                Bill,

Here's a diagram I made up a while ago that might help you diagnose the directionals. You can apply 12v directly to the harness wiring to test each lamp function. You can do this with the flasher removed, and just manually "flash" the 12v on each wire as the directional lever is Left or Right and see if the appropriate lights go on. A helper wil help see what's going on.

You mentioned a new HL switch fixed your Brake lights. Hmmmm.....But that didn't fix them. As the diagram shows, The Tail lights go thru the HL switch, not Brake lights. The Brake lights are directly from the fuse, via the brake pedal switch and the directional switch.

edit....ooops. I took too long to compose. I guess you solved it, yup sounds like you need the correct flasher.

Thank You for diagram. And i replaced the headlight switch fixed the dimmer.. But i think what fixed the brake lights was taking apart the two plastic connectors with wires from the steering colum and cleaning all of them and making sure there was good connectivity...

Yup, old wires and corrosion cause all kinds of problems. Glad you solved it!!
