Michael, Try one four barrel carb instead. Just kidding.
If you are planning on running a 58 FI unit let me tell you this. They can be a real sleeper provided they are updated. A 58 FI restored in it's stock form is seldom reliable. John

My '61 315 hp fuelie starts and runs very well. I drive it as often as I can and have been on 300+ mile trips with no problems. If the FI is tuned correctly you have a wonderful vette to drive. I am not against 2-4's; I just love the drive, sound and feel of the fuelie. Don't leave home without one.

        Re: FI or 2-4s?

Back in the day ('70's) I ran a couple of FI units - one early unit on a brand new '69 Chevelle - with no issues. I attribute most of that to the "good" gas we used to buy anywhere. Lately I've owned a couple of FI Corvettes - a '65 unit in a '57 (sorry) and a '63 unit in a '63 and I like to drive my cars. Neither one was reliable (rough idle, hot start) in summer weather and today's gas here in Kansas City. Never got stranded, but not an ideal situation. After a lot of research and talking to some real FI gurus (thanks JD and Jerry Bramlett) I switched to straight (no mixing!) race gas - problems solved. I love the look of FI when you pop the hood at a cruise-in but the limitation of not going more than a 1/2 tank of gas from home got the best of me. There's lots of information about FI and today's gas on Jerry Bramlett's website. Just passing on my experience - as you can see from the posts, others have had different luck.

I have put a lot of miles on my FI 63 coupe at 5280 Denver and at 12091 Independance Pass and everywhere in between. I do my own restoration and tuning and have a Kent Moore Manometer that I bought new. I find that fuel with no ethanol runs better and gets better MPG at 21MPG +. I created a small insulation pad that fits under the spyder out of something called second skin that is made out of butyl and foil that helps to insulate the spyder. I also leave my hood unlatched and open it when I plan on hot restarts. I have put over 100K miles on it since the early 80's and have driven it in all kinds of weather all over the US. It has always been a little contankerous when hot restarting even back when all the gas was supposed to be good but it is not much different now. I have never driven the car without it and never will. It is the smoothest best induction system that they had in the day and I love it. You are fairly close to me in NM. I say go for it and I will pass on my knowledge that I originaly got from Brian Futo when he lived in Boulder as well as what I continue to learn every year. I have driven it on many thousand mile trips that were two days or less stopping only for gas. I have started it at 30 below 0 in Minnesota. Mine doesn't foul plugs and doesn't stall or not want to idle. I will say that the 63-65 were the most developed units though but I have restored many for others and some of the owners are real fickle yet have very few issues. I agree with all of the above positive feedback that you have been recieving. I am not willing to put high dollar av gas or race gas in it to run. Mine has to be able to pull into any station of the road and gas up and go on and that's what it does.
          It's a good life!

Try attaching it to a boat like it was intended, or buy a C6.

Get a old Hilborn big block stack injector, convert it to electronic, add gas and hit the road.
