I know this is a dumb question, so forgive me it is late at night: Have you measured the Paragon belt to be sure it is what it is supposed to be? Both length (there are tools for that, but I haven't seen one in years -- but I would expect a good auto supply shop [not FLAPS] to have one) and more importantly the width. If the belt is too wide wide it will ride high in the pulley groove and one will need a longer belt to compensate.

Dale, likely your dealing with deep grooved pulleys? Try to remove the adjuster bolt(s) completely and that may let move the compressor forward, you'll get a little extra room, and install the belt, making the w/pump the last pulley to be installed on.I Did this with my72 C-60 corvette.

          Dale:

          Two thoughts:

          1. AC Compressor Clutch/Pulley is the wrong diameter and it should be 5 inch.

          2. The Paragon (likely Quanta) belt is actually a different size than indicated. This is what Terry suggested also. I would measure it to verify. I had a similar issue on my 1967 327/350 HP factory AC car. Quanta had TWO different belts with the same numerical part number, but different lengths, to accomodate the two different AC clutch/pulley sizes. One had an A suffix and the other had a B suffix. I needed the B one for my car.....there was about 1-1/2 inch difference in length between the two.

Thanks all. I just took the smog pump pulley off and unhooked the brace from the head cause it looked like the belt would fit if I could just clear the pulley lip. Kind of seems like a backdoor way to mount a belt but whatever works. Also had to use the old worn and stretched belt as the new one was too rigid. Can you put a belt in the oven to make it more workable? I thought about that but the wife kicked me out of her room.

Larry, I think the 64 -68 used that 5.75 pulley (5014745) and it may have changed to the 5 inch for 69 (6550750). Don't know for sure but my 68 calls for that 5.75 inch pulley. I saw a rare 63 at Bloomington with A/C and it had a smaller pulley than the 745.

I say that every time I go to work or church..."I can't get my belt on"

Must be something wrong with the belts I'm buying.

Yeah, I have some of those belts. I notice over the years clothes shrink alot more than they used to, especially waistes and tails.

Steve, two words- stretch pants. The problem I have with belts is my wife, she belts me everytime I mention the word the Corvette needs.

Speaking of stretch pants I saw a guy wearing skin tight pants last week and my wife referred to them as skinny jeans. I told her they were pegged pants---and she is still laughing about it. To me they will always be pegged pants. The guy just needed a white tee shirt, thin white belt, and a DA haircut. Sorry about your wife, I can relate.

My 1969 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1968) lists belt # 3921905 as 49 1/2" in length and 15/32" in width.

Its hard when you can't get your belt to clear your lips and your wife won't let you in the kitchen. Maybe that's why she won't let you in there, for yor own good.
