Only took two weeks - round tailight conversion for C7

Nostalgia can lead people to do some pretty nutty things. We just hope that no future C7 owners take measures as drastic as this body kit to give their car more "traditional" Corvette styling. Details inside...

Having personally seen the new C7 I like the GM version better.

Do you think they would make one with six?

Haven't seen the new one in person yet but I have to disagree, the round looks better to me. The square was too much a departure from the C6.

Agreed. I still don't like it, overall and especially at the rear, but the round tailights look MUCH better.

I like the round, but not to the tune of $2800.

The round kit looks much better, IMO, but I agree Mr. Hooper: "Do you think they would make one with six?" Those California Six Tail Lights setups were cool, I have lots of friends that have them even now.....

Real Corvettes have FOUR ROUND tail lights.Hope you were just tongue in cheek about 6. Six look like a ruined attempt at making a custom. Cringe every time I think about a nice C2 that somebody put 6 tail lights on back in the day. Looked OK on some '60's Impala's,but not Corvettes,

Styling cues for the C7 are different but did we really think it wouldn't change eventually? Forget the square>>>>> I'm with the round tail lights appearance.

I agree, now. But I have to tell you that when I was a teenager who had just seen my first Sting Ray in the mid-'60s, and I had these lyrics ringing in my ears from the radio song I loved:

I was cruisin' in my Sting Ray late one night

When an XKE pulled up on the right
He rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag
And challenged me then and there to a drag

I flew past La Brea, Schwab's and Crescent Heights
And all the Jag could see were my six taillights
He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve
But I pulled her out and there we were - at Dead Man's Curve street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
I gotta tell you, I wanted those Cali six tail lights....

It's funny to read these posts. If you read the posts on the CF, they all bash the guys who like round tail lights. I, myslef, like the round treatment. It must a be an old guy thing. LOL

Corvettes should have four (or six) round tail lights.

I didn't like the rear end when I first saw the leaked photos. However I did go and sent 30 minutes looking at the car in Detroit at the unveiling. After seeing it in person I changed my mind. They look so much better in person. The vast majority of people I spoke with at the show thought that GM did a nice job on the rear end.

If you think about it designers have a difficult job to do. They need to refresh the car's image to get younger customers buying the new corvettes but they still need to honor the corvettes past at the same time.

i feel now after spending some time with the car in person that they have achieved that. It's all Corvette.

I agree with Roy, I love the styling direction of the C7. When you see the car in person it all works together very well. Removing the GM treatment will remove the rear vents that are extracting air from the tranny and diff coolers and allowing better down-force. Removing them could upset the cooling and stability from what I understand.

                            Adam -

That's correct - the taillight housings are vented, providing the outlet for the air being fed to the trans and diff coolers from the inlets at the top of the quarter panels. They were able to do that due to the taillamp LED light sources being below each lamp, reflected upwards through the lenses.

It is highly unlikely that anyone outside GM or a supplier with a need to know has access to the proprietary detailed body drawings, which would be required to determine the mounting points and clearances to make a replacement panel... or a car to take measurements from.

                              Can you say... PHOTOSHOP!!!???
