The big blocks are notorious for running at higher temps. What factors in an engine rebuild will affect the operating temp? Will dropping the compression ratio help the engine run cooler? How about porting the heads? Cam selection?

Re: Big Block engine heat
If you want to cool the engine it has to do with circulation of water. If you don't think so take and get the car good and hot then take aheat gun and check the temp at the front of the head and the back of the head .A differance of 40 to 50 degrees is common. There is nothing to make the water go to the back the only outlet is in the front going back to the radiator'The heads have holes in them all you have to do is drill the manifold and let water out the back to the radiator and the temps will drop.- Top
