I was reviewing another topic in Nolan Adams' Vol. 1 and happened upon the paint combination charts on pages 306-309 and on page 403. I had always been led to believe that Silver and Ivory were the only colors available for the coves in the "two-tone" scheme, but a careful reading seems to indicate that a 1958 Second Series could be had in Silver with Black coves, or to be precise, with a Black "door and fender insert area." For the 1959 Second Series (page 308), the color options seem to multiply with either one or two asterisks denoting schemes with the "roof and back panel cove area" different from the body color (*) or a different "lower body except back panel cove area; hood and fenders" (**). For 1960, in addition to expanding the number of contrasting colors available, the chart also seems to indicate that the front and rear portions of the cove could be painted independent of each other. For 1961 (page 403) the contrasting colors seem to have reverted to silver or white only.
As one who has been involved with Corvettes since 1959, the reading of these charts has been a real eyeopener since I have never seen a factory painted car with other than a White or Silver fully painted cove. Has anyone seen an original 1958 in Silver with Black coves? How about a 1959 or a 1960 with only the front or rear portion of the cove painted in a contrasting color? Am I misreading the color charts in some way to provide for choices that were really not available?
