    Holley carburetor for my 66

I currently have a holly 4160 on my 66; however, it is a later service replacement dated 1971. I periodically look for a correct carb and there is an April 66 one on Ebay now. Unfortunately the pictures are not great, so I will need to contact the seller to get more info.

My question is what is a fair price to pay for one that will need rebuild/restoration? Vintage Muscle Cars pricing says his restoration starts at $250 and parts would be at least another $100. So, if the carb is in decent shape, looks like minimum for a restoration would be $350 plus the price of the carb.

I'm torn between looking for an already restored one, which I see on Ebay at $700-$800, or buying a used on and having it restored. The ones I see on Ebay now that are date correct are from a vendor with a less than stellar reputation.

    Need some advice please!!

    Thanks,

    Don

    Don,

The thread in the link below might be helpful. If you are going to spend big $ on a carb all the parts on it should be correct.

What are acceptable dates for a carburetor for a Mid July 66 build date?

        Don,

I would recommend applying the NCRS six month rule.

          Don:

If I was in your position (which I am with my own car) I would just be happy with the later service replacement carb as long as it runs and performs well.

However, if you MUST have the correctly dated carb, I would buy a restored unit from a reputable seller/restorer or buy the one from Chicago Corvette where you make the purchase in person at a car show or at his place of business. Eric Jackson (Vintage Musclecars) may have a restorered one for sale, or try Daytona Parts Company, Carbs Unlimited Inc., or Custom Rebuilt Carburetors. From what I hear, Chicago Corvette uses Custom Rebuilt Carburetors quite a bit for his carb restoration work.

Buying a carb core with the correct date can be a problem if the other parts are wrong or in very bad condition. Getting a restored carb, it should be "ready to run" with all the correct parts intact. Lock for a date about 1-2 months prior to your car build date.......although NCRS allows up to 6 months prior.

          FWIW. Larry

My current carb is working fine. I starting to gather some parts to start some restoration. I tend to agree with you and keep what I have and mane look in Carlisle this year.

            Thanks,

Do yourself a favor! Call Tom Zeman from Ghost performance. He is located in Islip NY. He is HONEST and the best I have seen in Carb restoration. He probably has what you need. I would bet on it!I met him a few years ago at Carlise. His phone number is (631) 581-2009

              Good Luck: Harry (38533)

                Donald,

Educate yourself as to what the original part #'s are on the metering block and what the float bowls look like. Some times the rebuilders replace the metering blocks because they are warped keeping in mind they have to guarantee the carburetor. The replacement metering blocks are much better reinforced to prevent this from happening.

Also, the early base plate bosses for the choke pull off are different than the service carburetors of the 70's. I believe the service base has two vacuum ports or one vacuum port and a undrilled boss for another.

Another question: I have a 66 427 carb (I think) with the following numbers 3886101 - E1 List 3247. Primary 4902-3 Secondary 3S2S-3. Inside the carb is 6R 2838. Another question--In the chev chassis manual it mentions #4160 and # 4150 carb's. which one o I can relate to for rebuilding purposes?

                  Thanks

4160 carbs have a primary metering BLOCK and a secondary metering PLATE. Usually, they are single inlet with a transfer tube from the primary fuel bowl to the secondary fuel bowl.

4150 carbs have both primary and secondary metering BLOCKS. Usually, 4150 carbs are dual inlet.
