I recently pulled the 427 out of my 69 because the #3 cylinder compression was low and air leak by tests indicated it was not a valve problem. After we got the heads off we noted the gasket was blown out toward the intake which I assume is why I had exhaust and oil coming out of the valve cover breather. The mechanic I am working with is recommending going to a Mallory Uni-lite ignition system and replacing the dual point system that was put in during the mid 70's. I know neither are considered to be restored but I enjoy driving the car and he thinks it will run better with a updated ignition. Thoughts?

Re: Dual Point vs. New Ignition
No dual points-old stuff. I'd consider the "one wire" points replacement advertised in Driveline if you just wanted to get rid of hassle with points. Pertronox 3 uses 2 wires but said to provide increased energy and multi spark at certain rpms. See thread about 'spark plug testing' if you want to see varied(some heated) opinions. I side with getting rid of points unless you like tinkering.- Top

Re: Dual Point vs. New Ignition
It won't run any better because of an updated ignition. It may run badly because of a worn, defective or badly adjusted system however. I'd fix whatever's on there now and enjoy it.- Top

Re: Dual Point vs. New Ignition
"What's in there now" is a dual point sustem which wasn't used on this engine to start with. Why would you want to fool with a dual point system? Not used since early 60's.Point wear, distributor cam wear, dwell variation, having to block one set of points to set the other, other fun things with points.- Top

Re: Dual Point vs. New Ignition
I agree with Mike in that it won't run any better but you will not be disappointed with the one wire breakerless SE. I installed one in my 67 300hp car and I am very pleased with it. the car runs like it has new points all the time.- Top
