    Left turn signal not flashing

On my 62 the left turn signal has stopped flashing. All lights light up, brake lights work, right turn signal works. When I turn on the left signal, the front left and rear left light up but do not flash. I intend to get flight judged in Austin next month, and flight judged in Frisco at the Lone Star Regional for Star Bowtie signoff. I am trying not to mess with much due to a shot at Star Bowtie next year in Kansa City. Can I try to fix this problem w/o jeopardizing any points?

    John,

Does the left dir Dash lamp light? If not, the reduced load may not be enough for the flasher to trip off/on.

If you step on the brake does the left rear stay lit?

Looks as though you are experiencing some grounding problems......shouldn't be too difficult to rectify.

When that happens on my 1960, it means a grounding issue. I will see you in Bee Cave next month, but won't be driving the 225 miles in the 1960.

I had exactly the same symptoms with my 62. Replaced the flasher and everything works. I'm not certain that they check the flasher during Bowtie but believe that they do as that was one thing that I know was checked when I had it inspected privately. If it is a bad flasher you'll need it to be functional for flight judging but may, as they don't tell exactly what they look for in Bowtie judging, need the original for Bowtie judging. I'm not sure about the legality of switching the flasher between judgings as mine failed after Bowtie judging so it wasn't an issue.

Yes, It could be a bad ground. That can do strange things.

Since a 62 has 2 lamps per side, make sure you have the correct bulbs. Are both left lamps lit when not flashing?

One other possibility.....I just noticed "similar threads" at bottom of page.....

If the tail lamp socket harness connectors are reversed, it would change the load because the filaments of the bulbs would be reversed.

This is a classic symptom of a bad flasher. John, replace the flasher first and in the low likelyhood that it still continues, look for a bad ground.

Has anyone taken a flasher apart? Can they be rebuilt internally? Mine is a Signal-Stat ZN332-12V. Any pictures of one apart?

Okay, curiosity got the best of me. I had to open it up. The ZN332-12V Signal-Stat flasher. Here are a few pics, but not sure what I am looking at.

You can test the flasher by connecting it directly to a 12V battery with a couple of jumper wires. I tested my ZN 232 flasher that way and it worked. Do you have a ZN 332 or ZN 232?

I took the flasher apart and cleaned the contact. Put back in and the right side blinks, but not the left. The left parking light and two rear left side come on,but do not blink. All brake lights work, headlights and taillights work. Parking lights work. Where would you start looking for a bad ground?

I would check the voltage at the lights with the left turn signal selected. It sounds like the load on the left is not correct may be in the turn signal switch. It may also be a bad connection in the rear between the 2 tail lamps. I do not know how they ground the housing but I would make sure they are all clean.

just run a temp. jumper cable from the left taillight housing(s) to a reliable ground (bare metal on the frame) and check if that makes a difference...

I took the bulbs out front and back. They were GE 1034. I cleaned the sockets and contacts. Also found a loose wire in the front harness that crosses in front of the hood. Seem to work okay now. Thanks for all the help everyone!
