    1968 Rear Axle Codes

Is there anything systematic about the rear axle codes that appear on a tank sticker for 1968 (L89/M21) ? For example, mine says 02G81SA but unfortunately the part of the sticker to the right of the code is not legible and I can't tell what the related axle ratio should have been.

    Thanks in advance,

    Noel

    Hello Noel,
The code is for 4.11 rear end ratio.

I was not aware that that information was available! I have the same issue my tank sticker list the rear axle as 02G81PA I was told it should be 3.70. Is this correct?
        Thanks

            Hi Harold,

I'm not sure. It does seem that they can vary. For exampe, I have seen a 67 L71/M21 car with 02G81NA for 3.70 and a 69 L71/M21 car with 02G81WA for 3.70. I'm not sure whether this is due to difference years or something else. It would be interesting to find our more on this topic

              Drew,

Would you have a list of all the tank sticker rear
axle codes that you could share ?

              Thanks in advance,

              Noel

                  Re: 1968 Rear Axle Codes

It seems that early C3 RPO G81 ECL suffixes (window sticker, tank sheets, etc, NOT the assembly stamping on the bottom carrier) were different than the C2 era [check Noland's vol 2 for the complete '63-7 lists]; have no idea why they'd be changed for 1968 MY.

Looking at a sheet listing the RPO's for about 24 1968 Corvettes shipped to Canada, I deduce that some of the C2 small block codes were used for C3 big blocks, and vice-versa, and new big block codes were introduced.

Examples: base engine car with 02G81GA which for '65-7 would indicate L79 with 4.11's; impossible per the '68 powertrain chart. NA on a '68 L79, which would mean 3.70 with L78, L36, L68 or L71 in a C2. It seems that PA is still being used for big blocks in 1968, but now 3.70 rather than 4.11 in previous C2 years (per Drew, above).

                  G81LA on a '68 L36, that would have indicated 3.36 ratio on a L88 w/M22 in '67.
                  G81SA on a '68 L71, that would have indicated 3.70 ratio on a L88 w/M22 in '67.

                  .... and so on.
