    Failed Blower Motor Resistor

Just got the engine rebuilt and was getting the car running when we noticed an electrical burning smell and light smoke. Tough to tell the source with the dash in but it appeared to be from the passenger side. Have taken the dask out and checked all the wires but have not found the source yet. After some more research we decided to look at the AC blower motor resistor (even though the original owner removed the AC in the 70s). Has anyone ever had this resistor go bad and experience similar burning smell and smoke?
