    Flight Judging & Bowtie

Would you replace missing decals for Flight Judging and Bowtie or leave it alone? Points vs orginality.

Two different animals. Yes to Flight Judging. No to Bowtie.

Attempts to restore a Bowtie candidate is counterproductive and is 'cheating' in my book.

        Mike,
I don't think Jerry is asking what your are suggesting but his question is not very clear. He needs to be more specific. It seems to me that he may be having his car Flight judged and is hoping to have it Bowtie judged as well. If that is the case he is not cheating at all in my opinion. Jerry needs to weigh the gain in Flight points against any possible bowtie penalties.

You're exactly right Dave. That's my dilemma. I'm not trying to cheat, otherwise I wouldn't ask the question.

Fair enough. Be aware that any attempts to restore a car to score higher in Flight Judging, other than simple cleaning, may lessen the chances of a car being considered for Bowtie.

Your best course of action is present the car as-is (after gentle cleaning) for Flight Judging. If the judges believe that it might be a Bowtie candidate, then decide if you want to pursue that award. Again, don't attempt to make it more original through restoration. You might be surprised just how well an unstrored but orignal car will do in Flight Judging, the points are biased towards originality rather than condition in most cases.

If it appears that car is not suitable for Bowtie, then you may wish to go the restoration route for Flight Judging. Or, just enjoy the car as-is.

            Choice is yours.

Perhaps my answer above was a little abrupt. Not that long ago, I was made aware of well known component restorer who was re-doing a component to help the owner get a Bowtie for his car. This was not just 'cleaning', but a carefully laid out plant to artificially age washers, bolts, housing patina, replace long lost fittings etc. I was pretty upset about this obvious attempt to cheat.

Thanks Michael. I wasn't sure which way to go, but you helped me with my decision. I'll leave it alone. We'll see what happens in a couple of weeks.

Basically the flight judging is a point system deducting points for incorrect parts, condition, functionality, etc. where the Bowtie is for original unmolested cars (25 yrs old) judged in four different categories. Two areas must be 80% correct and the other two at 85%. Each correct area gets one star. Up to four stars but you can get a fifth star for attending more events displaying the car and then back to the convention. Bowtie judging is only at the convention but it has to be approved to go at a regional event. No point system here, just judges opinion. That's the basics as I know it. Never been through it before.......yet.
