    1971 Under Hood Markings

I was sanding the back side of the hood from my 1971, April 29th build date and uncovered a date and another code. It had 5-14-71 and then underneath was n-3. This was handwritten in a yellow colored marker of some kind. Anyone have any idea what this meant. Also found the Rockwell tag on the hood with 71 20 on the tag. I am sure this is a date tag, what does the 20 stand for, is it the week or something else
    Thanks in advance

The markings you are seeing are normal when the black out paint is removed frome the underside of the hood 5-14-71 is a date but N-3 I am not sure of. The Rockwell date code is 71= 1971 and 20= 20th week.

The car production was April 29th yet the date on the hood is may 14th which coincides with the rockwell date also. Would replacement hoods have the dates written on them or was this only done on the assembly line in the body shop part of production?

Is the date for your car from the Trim Tag if so the date is when the plate was installed. With the dates of your hood being after the build of the car it is most likely a replacement hood the reason for the replacement is unknown. It could be a hood from another car or it could be a service hood but my gut would be that is a hood off another car.

The car build date is from the GM records and the paint on the hood had four layers of paint on it identical to the rest of the body, with the last layer definitely being lacquer. All coats matched the rest of the car. The only other things I thought of is perhaps the hood was damaged in transport to the dealer and a replacement had to be put on it. The only thing is whether the date would be hand written on a service replacement hood.

            Sheldon,
Is the yellow marker under the factory black-out?

I have seen a variety of dealer marks such as stock numbers and coolant protection level (-30* for example), but all of them have been on the top of the blackout, and in a variety of colors.

Yes the yellow marking was under the what appeared to be the blackout paint. At first I thought it was still engine oil and carbon and I went and pressure washed it and it cleaned up a bit but not lioke I thought it would. After it dried I started sanding and realized it was the paint but really oxidized. It would rub off like it was grease. the markings are in the left hand side of the rear part of the hood at a 45 degree angle to the side and back. I took pictures but the cord for my camera has gone MIA so I can't download them.

OK I found the cord for my camera. I will try and post a picture of the writing. Also I was wondering about where the 454 emblems stick through, there is a piece of fiber mesh glued to the hood on the backside where the emblems nuts go with a pinkish putty similar to what was used for bonding the panels. This was also under the blackout paint. Is this normal? Thanks SheldonIMGP0069-1.jpgIMGP0070-1.jpg
