    wheel/tire storage

What is the best way to store wheels mounted on tires that are orginals? They will be in a climate controlled building and I'm thinking about getting tire tote bags. These wheels/tires will only be used for judging.

    Re: wheel/tire storage

I put mine for the 2008 in tire tote bags from Tire Rack. I am noticing some discoloration of the bag material, but I am not sure what this means, if anything. I store in a cool dry place away from ozone generating items -- electric motors. I believe the tote bag will keep the tires in darkness, which I have seen as another recommendation.

Terry, Do you them on a floor and if you do, do you stack them or not? I found tote bags on ebay that are cheaper with storage for the lugs in the bag set of 4 $45-$50 tire rack $80

I have them laying flat on several layers of cardboard on the floor, however for space and convenience I am not happy with that situation. I am also reluctant to mount them on a wall rack because the temperature higher in the storage building will not be as moderate.

I did an unscientific experiment a few years back. The used race slicks I stored over the winter wouldn't have much grip left in the spring. I had 2 mounted sets left one year that had 5 heat cycles on them (still very usable). Both sets were stored in the house, one set was put into heavy trash bags and vacuumed tight (shop vac/twist tie). On a test day in the spring the vacuumed set started to get decent grip in 5 laps, the unbagged set still wasn't great at 15 laps. I tried it again the following winter and got the same results. The tires had nitrogen in them only because nitrogen out of a bottle is dryer than air from a compressor.
