Changing Dash Bulbs on my 67

    Hello -

Can this be done with the dash in the car?

What are the "tricks of the trade" for ones that have already done this w/o removing the dash?

I know it can be pulled out a bit on 1/4x20 long bolts

Can you get to the Brake and headlamp warning bulbs as well?

Any suggestions and guidelines are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks All!

Al, there really not way that I know to reach the brake and headlamp warning bulbs. I just went through the same thing with my 63. I can give my tips if you want to call them that.

Un-hook the oil line out at engine and tach cable from dist. I think that it a little easier at those points. I then removed the steering column brackets( gives a litttle downward movement for access to bulbs). then removed the dash screws and pulled the instrutment panel out to access those bulbs H/L & Brake/L bulbs. I will warn you that the repro bulb do work but flashing speed is not correct, so if there a PV in the future you may want to find some NOS or GE257 bulbs. As for the dash bulbs you can access some from the top and some from under dash. When getting ready to re-install cluster, besure to hook the ground wire at the top of cluster, Its a little tight quarters.

Are both the brake and headlamp warning bulbs supposed to flash?

Scott, I believe that 67 was different for the headlamp. but the brake light was suppose to. Do you have a JM for 67?

Yes thanks, just saw that the brakes are steady state and the headlamp is the 257 bulb. Should have read that before I installed the cluster this past weekend! BTW, I just bought the last partial box of old stock Wagner 257's this morning from my local NAPA so they are still out there if you are lucky.

Just put a cluster in a 63. Use the long bolts , you can get at all the bulbs, with it hanging out on the long bolts i will admit that the colum was not in the car so that made it easier. Good luck

I'm doing the bulbs on mine now and I must admit it has been a very frustrating experience.

I have the speedo and tach disconnected and the oil line still attached. I really don't want to touch it as its bone dry and does not leak. I see enough extra line at the fire wall (coils) so I'm not worried about it. - It's the original line - never changed. The column is loose and the dash is no where near hitting it.

The left side of the cluster wants to move out more freely then the side with the speedo and oil gauge. The ignition switch is still installed. I have the cluster on a few long bolts. I'm not sure what is holding the cluster back so I can't get to the directional signal bulbs. I have everything else connected as is. Do I need to remove the ignition and light switches as well? And also my dash wiring harness is still "clipped" to the bak of the cluster - as the dash has NEVER been removed since new. I dont think this matters as I am not tryong to remove the cluster - just changing the bulbs.

So how do you change the bulbs? - like the directional signals - from the side front or from the back.. How do you change the top warning lights - from the front top of the dash? and how do you change the rest of them? from the back underneath? They are really hard to push back in. Do you use any special tools?

if you are going to "Duntov" the car - you should look for original bulbs or find some that blink slow. most of the repro bulbs blink too fast. if "Duntov" isn't in your plans - it really doesnt matter for flight judging.
