    tec area

I see different ncrs chapters web sites with Tec articles and DYI sections. Their seems to be allot of the same questions on this site. Would it be an idea to have a TEC area and a DYI for
the guys like myself that like to work on our own cars ? ( PDF downloads ) Am I missing something ? search brings
up allot of none related issues. Thanks

this is the technical / DIY area of the NCRS website. But PDF downloads are not provided. If you search the technical archives forum you will find most processes discussed. If not finding what you need in search, go to FAQs in tool bar above, and check "how to search". There you will learn tips for effectively searching. And if you still do not find what you need, throw your subject out in a new thread and many here will point you towards DIY guides found elsewhere in the WWW. I have found how to do many processes simply by entering the process in any search engine, such as google. ie, how to remove corvette trailing arms, how to remove corvette door window glass, etc.

Wayne, If you purchase the NCRS Restorer archives (on CD) from the store, it has many member written guides to repairs. Don H.

          Re: tec area

I've asked in the past about adding a general posts area for posts about meets and road trips and such non-technical stuff, as well as breaking out the areas into C1, C2, C3, C4 etc, to make searching and results better. but the forum leads felt it would be confusing to people. its based on how the forum was originally a bulletin board system (BBS) called technical Discussion Board (TDB).

Breaking the different models into separate sections would require anyone interested in more than one model to go into different forums to find or post an answer. Don't forget that not all models are unique, and many problems/solutions are shared not only in nature but also by their repair techniques. Having separate sections for C1,C2,C3,C4, etc would break up and decrease the available knowledge base (and tire them out even more), as well as lead to many, many more duplicative answers. It would be a tremendous mistake.

              Re: tec area

I can definitely see your angle. For me since everything is all together, it basically REQUIRES you to sue AND and OR and * and ? to find exactly what you want, or you need to sift through dozens of threads. It would make search easier to search in specific areas IMO. There would be some duplication, but only of things that cross all makes like paint, engine rebuilding, judging, etc. There are TONS of topics that are specific to C1 or C2, etc... trailing arms are on C2 but not C1... tire pressure sensor not on C2 or C1... some amount of segmentation would be beneficial.... as the posts build up, people don't bother to search in detail and make duplicate posts anyway and people say "search the archives"... there are pros and cons to everything....

                Re: tec area

I don't know if you've noticed, but I have watched the knowledgeable guys get tired of giving the same answer, and at times they are conspicuously absent. Most of them return, but when they're not there newer members such as us have to step in.

Ian, the problem is in the search engine, not the forum format. I try to give a link to the archives every time I reference a specific thread, but this is difficult in most cases. One of the problems is that the search engine only recognizes words, not phrases. You can't list references to a specific item for a specific model without the search concentrating on the words alone and providing a million possiblities. I can understand how people shy away from the archives because they are not easy to use. That's why you see most people say "search the archives". Despite my good intentions, I too am guilty of this.

                  Ian,

You may know this already, but if the thread was posted with C1, C2, 66 or whatever selected, you can click on that to only see threads that pertain to 1966 for example.

                    Re: tec area

Thanks Joe! I hadn't realized. just checked and that doesn't seem to work for searches, just current threads. I don't see the icons on search results.... that is cool for browsing current threads though.

I agree with what you're saying Paul about the search... an alternative might be to use google, but we are blocking google from crawling the TDB it seems, since we want members-only access. for instance, ebay removed wildcards from their searches (for WHATEVER reason)... so you can search ebay with google by using site:www.ebay.com in the bar as an alternative.... not so here (and I understand why).
