deck lid/seat separator latch

the deck lid will not latch to the seat separator on my 57. The mounting surface on the deck lid is angled to the rear so shims only move the latch down and away from the seat separator. Does anyone know if this is correct or has the prior owner performed work on the deck lid and reversed the latch mounting pad.
