    Deck Lid Original Painting

I am doing a frame off on a 1969 convertible and have a question on how the deck lid was painted at the factory. I removed the deck lid to have more room to remove the carpet. On looking at the lid, it apprears that the lid was attached in the open position as it went through the paint step. The underside of the lid is body color and some of the hardware for latching the lid is also painted body color. The hardware for latching the hardtop or soft top is not painted and appears to be installed at a later date. The back side edge of the lid has very little primer or paint. After the underside of the deck was painted, was the lid then shut and the top side painted along with the body? When I lift the body, should I reinstall the deck lid to add some rigidity ? Thanks for any comments or thoughts.

    Steve -

The deck lid was fully installed and fitted in the Body Shop, including the release handle and latches, and was opened and closed as required as the body later passed through the various spray booths, sanding decks, ovens, etc. The top latch receiver hardware was installed after the Paint Shop, on the Hard Trim Line. Photo below is a midyear, but yours was processed exactly the same way.

WOW John...wonderful picture; look at the mask, gloves and all the safety equipment the guy is using.
This is probably why OHSA was born.

Thanks for the picture and comments on painting. It looks like that is the way my deck lid was painted.
        Thanks again for your response.
