Can't say for sure but I'll bet a dollar to a dog turd it is the same Dupont lacquer sealer used on midyears. Kind of a semi dark grey.

Not an expert on paint, but I say it was red. If you look under original paint cars on the edges or at the bottom of door edges or the very lower part of door jams where it the rocker moulding is mounted, it is not uncommon to see red primer where they missed probably because the painter was too lazy to bend down or did not think it was important enough to cover that area entirley.

Red oxide. May have various coverage of some gray sealer.

i just finished stripping the original paint off a 64. from the outside in, riverside red, dark grey sealer(very thin coat compared to there red oxide primer in direct contsact with the fiberglass panels). of interest was the thickness of red oxide on pass side vs its thickness on drivers side. it took three coats of capt lee paint remover to strip tthe drivers side to bare glass and 6 to 7 applications of the captain to get to glass on pass side. i assume one of the primer applicators( there were a pair of painters on the st louis line) was a newbie, the other a veteren.mike

            thanks for the feedback -
I thought the last coat was red oxide, but not sure.

The only thing that makes me wonder though - my 72 was a one owner car with factory lacquer on it. I personally DA'd the paint off the car and for the life of me don't
remember any red oxide, but rather a dark gray/black primer.

Is there any chance that the primers may have changed from year to year?

I do remember red oxide on a very original 66 coupe....

Just want to be sure I get this correct while restoring the 69 coupe I am purchasing.

            Thanks as always -
            Bill

There was a change in later years as they switched to SMC panels. I don't remember exactly when. But 69 is what you asked about and red oxide is correct for that.

Red oxide on my March 68 - I was surprised at how much over-spray of red oxide was in the interior- floors and sides of the transmission tunnel were fairly well covered with a good amount of Lemans Blue on the floors stopping at the transmission tunnel. The removable hardtop had a very thick layer of Red Oxide compared to the body it seems.

On my 1970, where the paint is thin, red oxide is showing. I really have to get that thing out for John Ballard to see.

I stripped the factory lacquer off a late 70 car. The doors were actually white SMC and the rest of the car was regular grey polyester fiberglass. It had red primer that I wet sanded off after taking the lacquer and most of the grey sealer/primer off with chemical stripper. This must have been the introduction of SMC parts. I don't know if all 70's used SMC doors.
