    C1 Battery

For those of you who do not wish to spend $350 for a correct appearing, dated, and delivered reproduction tar top battery, you can buy a currently produced AC Delco "Advantage" or "60 series" Group 24 battery. This battery will get you 1/2 the judging points. I just installed one in my '62. Fits perfectly.

The AC Delco part number is 24A. The old AC Delco part number is ACD24-60. The Chevrolet part number is 88863812. It's list price is $90 plus a core charge. You can usually find it discounted. I bought mine locally for $77.47. I have seen them priced on the Internet for less than that. You will have to look around. Not too many places carry AC Delco batteries today. And many of the places that do carry AC Delco batteries, only carry their "Professional" series batteries. The AC Delco "Professional" series batteries have brackets on the outside edge of the top that interfere with the C1 battery hold-down. You could cut them off. But that would void the warranty. The "60 series" or "Advantage" battery has a built in handle on the top that folds down flat into a well on the top. It does not extend to the sides. This handle helps somewhat with the installation. This "60 series" or "Advantage" series battery is a lower quality battery than the "Professional" series. It has an 18 month replacement warranty.

The trick to installing the heat shield/hold-down is to put a rubber band around the battery. Attach the "J"-bolts to the tray and move them out of the way of the battery. Then put the battery in its tray. After the battery is in the tray, slip the "J"-bolts under the rubber band on the battery to hold them up and in place to install the heat shield/hold-down. If you have the correct "J"-bolts and the correct battery, the "J"-bolt will stick up through the heat shield/hold-down about 3/8" - or just enough to get the washer and nut started. When torqued down, there's only a little thread showing on the "J"-bolts above the nut. Cut off the rubber band after you have washers and nuts on the "J"-bolts.

Don't forget the felt washer on the positive terminal. Don't forget to polarize the generator.

Chris, I wish I knew about the rubber band this Saturday when I was reinstalling my battery cover. Great idea. See you in Marlboro.
