    1963 Steering Column Insulator

This question is about the insulator that rests in the notch of the escutcheon on a 1963 steering column. The part # is 3823015 and this part is not to be confused with the grommet #3831581 which sets inside the escutcheon with the retainer.

Does anyone have any information on this insulator, I am thinking about using some rubber strip like what's used to install the door window to sash but thought I would ask what others have done. The rubber may be to thick, this part was listed in some old parts books but no description which is what I am looking for.

    Thanks for any information.

    Hi Tim,

I was looking at this too and as a pure guess - I wonder if the insulator is the same material used for the grommet inside the escutcheon, just that it runs outside in the notch.

If you look at the online parts catalogs, the internal rubber grommet seems to be a very thin strip of rubber.

Douglas, I have noticed that in the catalogs but they sell it with the clip so it's use must be as the grommet. What's sad is that pictures in these catalogs show a spring below the upper bearing and can be very misleading. I will try to fit a piece of that window rubber used in the sash and see how it fits. I assume it's purpose is to insulate against vibration and keep a dedicated ground path for the column through the rag joint to frame.
